Did anyone watch this programme last night about the elderly. This poor old man only had his cat for company and the cat died, omg Crying

So sad that our elderly are just forgotten about. I understand that some families don't have the resources or time to look after their parents, but most are shoved into homes by families that think they have served their purpose and visited once a month with a bunch of garage flowers. So so sad.

It's terribly sad. When you hear of people that have died and not been found for weeks or even months it rams home how insular our society has become in lots of ways. My mum lives with me and my family and it has worked out really well, we are there to support each other and gives me peace of mind knowing that there will always be someone there for her.

I have seen a couple of documentaries on how the eldery are treated by some of the Care In The Community schemes and it was heartbreaking. Frowner

These elderly people makes me laugh, cry, happy and so on.

Very sad for Jim,Frowner

I have every intention to look after my parents should they not be able to...they have done and still do so much for me I love them to death.

It was the first i'd watched queenie, and yes, as you say it made us laugh, but old Jim, saying he would never have another cat! If I were his carer i'd just take a kittie and say I found it, here you go. I really sobbed.

Shame there aren't more likeminded peeps Frowner Hug

It is depressing Bunny, but I think it's a good idea to show the world what getting old is really like, it's not all its cracked up to be is it hun Frowner Hug

I have it on series link and I’ve been watching every week. There are some very sad and poignant moments (dealing with death so there are bound to be) and it exposes how selfish some people are (like the lady who put her – at 55 relatively young - husband in there against his wishes because he’d had a stroke). I wasn’t keen on the 91 year old woman OR her daughter who featured last night, complaining about the elderly people there who hadn’t bought their own property. Those two women represented everything I hate about attitudes to the elderly, where exactly did they expect the elderly who can’t afford to buy to bide – on the streets!?
It’s also a very heartening programme though, seeing people who’ve been together for decades still deeply in love. I don’t think the retirement village is an awful place, there are lots of people living there who obviously feel secure and part of a community.
Anyway it’s an amazing programme so kudos to the makers, gives a clarity I can cope with about something that will happen to us all (i.e. old age).
