Just wanted to tell you about my bunny rabbit Blackberry as he's a bit not right.

He had a friend Binky, who died 7th May and he's just gone downhill since then the poor little thing. He's 7 1/2 years old so it's not a surprise but it's really sad.

He's dragging one of his rear paws, it doesn't work at all - he doesn't seem to be in any pain which is good but he can't hop around like he used to. He also now appears to be incontinent and all the hair has come off a patch of his back legs where he's been weeing on himself Frowner

We also think he's now deaf as he doesn't respond to noises.

Because he doesn't hop around a lot since Binky died we hadn't spotted the leg until I washed him up last night because of the wee and so we've booked to take him into the vet today and I'm honestly worried about what they're going to say about him. I'll understand if they suiggest putting him to sleep but I do feel really sad about it because it's not that long since we lost Binky and we've had the for 7 years now so it won't seem the same without them there.

I don't think the vet will think that. They will see how much you care, otherwise you wouldn't be taking him to the vet. Taking him is the best thing to do and hopefully the vet will be able to do something for him. Hug

Aww,poor bunny,it does sound like his time has come. He's pretty old, rabbits only live 6 to 8 years. Some breeds even less than that. Frowner

Our Pixie bunny lived till just before she would have been 10 years old which is a really grand age for a rabbit but, as you say katty, the average is between 6 and 8.

Thank you everyone. Binky died of a heart attack bounding around the garden and so we didn't take him to the vet. They've always been so healthy it's such a shock to see him like this.

I know they usually deteriorate quickly when their friend dies but he was eating and drinking OK so I thought that generally he was fine but it appears he was just going through the motions Frowner Frowner

Awwwwwwwwwwww poor you Foxie Frowner

I understand completely how you feel.

I hope the vet can do something for him.

We have a little bunny who was 10 this year, he is a little dwarf breed adn when his guinea-pig died who he had been with since birth he did get very lonely.
I didn't think he would survive the winter as he was looking bedraggled but I kept him warm with blankets and a hot water bottle at night and recently found another guinea-pig for him which has perked him up.

I hope and pray that you will have good news from the vet.

They put Blackberry to sleep because he was just skin and bone and almost certainly would have ended up with fly strike because of the incontinence.

He offered us painkillers but said that it wouldn't have been long anyway.

Bye bye Blackberry x

Oh foxy I'm so, so sorry. I'm sitting here crying now.

You know you did the kindest thing for him and you gave him a wonderful life along with Binky.

It's awful when our beloved animals die but at least we can ease their final journey for them with dignity.

Looking at it just brings home how different he was lately. I know it's for the best but I do keep questioning whether there was any other choice. I keep bursting into tears - sorry

Awwww, foxy Frowner Hug
Don't feel daft for grieving - it shows how much you cared and I bet both those bunnies knew they were loved. Nod

I know it's always horrible when a pet dies, speaking as someone who has bawled her eyes out over hamsters kicking the bucket.

Comfort yourself by remembering what happy lives Blackberry and Binky had with you. Hug

aaw, Bless Crying A few years back when my kids were younger, we had Gerbils. One of them literally had a heart attack and died in the cage in front of us all! Frowner Frowner It was the most horrible thing to see and really effected my kids at the time... The other gerbil just seemed to pine for him from that day onward. Frowner It would not eat, wouldnt let us pick him up, and just appeared very very sad. In the end I took him to the vets and they said the kindest thing was to put him down. He was about 3 and a half, so was quite old for a gerbil, but it was still really sad. Crying Just goes to show that animals can feel "pain" in the same way as we do sometimes. Hope your little Bunny recovers. Its awful when your pets ill coz you feel so helpless. Frowner
