Wow, you're clever. I'm a cake decorator too so I can appreciate all the time you have put into making the rose. Love the tinge of pink in the centre
The tinge of pink is somethng I saw in a book by Alan Dunn. The man is a genius! He also advised about putting the mixture of green, white and yellow at the base of the petals to make the centre 'glow' and I think it's very effective and made the flower look very realistic. I only hope my client appreciates it!
Alan Dunn is fantastic with colours. I've always wanted to do one of his workshops but never managed to. He's a geordie just like me! I once had lessons from Linda Pawsey (another very talented cake decorator) on modelling figures in sugar and cold porcelain.

I've never done a course *blush* my grandma taught me some stuff when I was younger and I enjoyed the arty bits but could never make the cakes well. However, for some reason my friends started to ask me to make cakes and then I realised that I could actually cook a decent cake and then I got a Mich Turner book and it reawakened the passion and the whole business thing has gone from there really! People seem to like what I do and most of my work is from people who had attended an event with one of cakes which is the best way

I used to do a lot of cakes for people but never really charged what they were worth so I don't do it anymore. I'm really glad you are making a success out of it though as it is a very satisfying and rewarding hobby.
Unless you already do it can I make a suggestion? If you photograph the finished cake then view it on a large scale (say the computer) the photograph shows any blank spaces that need decoration. I did this when I did my Daughter's wedding cake which was burgundy roses with trailing ivy. It looked lovely to the naked eye but when viewed on screen it definitely needed a bit more.

That is something I haven't heard before but a great suggestion! Definitely something I'll be using - I need all the help I can get! It's more of an overgrown hobby than a proper business (for the moment anyway) but it keeps me busy and it's really nice to feel I achieve something whilst I'm at home looking after kids!
