I have my 16 year old niece coming to stay with us this weekend and I promised to do something really special for her as she passed her GCSE's and is starting a hairdressing/beautician course next month (and I get to be the guinea pig for all the new ways of colouring, because I won't be letting her cut my hair, until she needs to be able to practice cutting a bob!!)

Thing is, I don't just want to take her shopping, we did that when she left school, I brought her a new top yesterday because she had passed her exams, so now I want to do something really special, but I don't know what.

She is a real girly girl, loves pink, make up clothes the usual, surgically attached to her mobile and tons better than me on the computer, in other words I suppose a typical 16 year old!!

Not having kids myself, I just don't know how to show her how proud we both are of her, so I wanted to do something special and now I need help!!!

What about buying a small wicker basket, go to the shops and buy face masks, false eyelashes, fake tan, spray on colourful hair dye and assorted bits and pieces, a CD or DVD of her fave band and settle down with some wine or alcopops, put the music on and do each other up?

Blimey, she's already had a shopping trip, a new top and permission to guinea-pig your hair - what else does she need?

I'd say a card, a hug, a kiss and a hearty "Congrats" should be enough. Eeker

I know, I know it seems as if I am spoiling her, but I will never have a daughter or son to share the excitement of exam results with so I suppose I am spoiling her.

Thanks for all the suggestions, we are going to get some make up ect as Sunnie suggested and stay in tomorrow night with a bottle of wine, and a couple of films she really likes and as one last surprise I've just booked her in for a photo session with a local firm next week, so they will come back when she has started college. She knows about the makeup and nails and sadly she has talked me into trying extensions, this could be a bad idea!!!

They may well turn up on here, I'm just so proud of her, she didn't think she would get her grades, she had some problems at school and with her idiot of an ex, and when she texted me yesterday, even though I felt rough, both of us took her out and got her top!!

She has texted me to say how do I feel about pink hair extensions? I have blonde/grey hair so getting worried here!!
