My two favourite films (never mind favourite B+W films) would be "Casablanca" and "Seven Samurai". (Which one comes first varies continually depending on mood and situation.)
"12 Angry Men", "Brief Encounter" and "Dr Strangelove" would all be high up there too...

Anything with Bette Davis. loved her
I was just going to say Bette Davis - one that sticks in the mind is the one where she was going blind and she asked the nurse what 'prognosis negative' meant....
That was Dark Victory

Some years ago, I was amazed to discover how most of friends had never seen many of my favourite "classic" films, so I started an education campaign. "Casablanca" and "12 Angry Men" have been the most successful so far. I'm also really proud to have turned one friend into a major Jacques Tati fan (although the first film he saw was "Mon Oncle", which is actually in colour...)

Just remembered another one that should have been on my list: "Les Diaboliques".
One of my favourite French films, and one of the greatest "twist" endings ever.
Don't even think of watching the Hollywood remake...
