I'm wondering if she knew she has this condition? She's so very young and it may have come as a shock to her.

I think Jamie Lee Curtis had similar confusions at her birth. I don't think she is able to bear children as she has no womb etc. Just what I heard and I could be wrong. I think when there is confusion there can be minor surgery and the parents told to raise the child as a girl. Don't all shout at once, just what I was told.

Well, you could have worded that a lot better...

I do feel sorry for Ms Semenya; she's getting an awful lot of unwanted attention over this from the media.

It's certainly possible that she may have an intersex condition; but it's also possible that she may just be built that way. A lot of women from the African tribes have what could be decribed as a masculine build; and the intense training she would have undertaken would certainly exaggerate that. Personally, I think that's a far more likely explanation, but I suppose we'll have to wait for the results of the IAAF 'gender test' (which, incidentally, aren't foolproof; in the 1992 Olympics, 5 women out of the 2500 tested failed to produce an unambiguous 'female' result, and in the 1996 games, that number went up to 8...and all of them were subsequently shown to be unquestionably female).
Incidentally,

Remember back in the 70's Croc (or are you too young?). Kratochvilova (sp) was very masculine and no one said anything about it in the papers - but of course it was commented on by the Gen Public.
Nowadays, they presume, print and then go and research.

They have done this very untastefully.
You would think and international governing body would be able to handle this in the best possible way, today I saw on tv that the South African body hadn't even recieved a LETTER for the tests, they all heard by hearsay and such.
If it comes back that she is a female unquestionably, or she has a slight hormonal imbalance I really hope they grovel so hard, she's only 18 and if that was me I really do not know what I would do, that is horrible. Frowner

I don't agree with African women having a masculine built, I lived in Nigeria for a long time and practically all the woman there were just that, all woman. Having said that, I think this story is horrible for this girl. I can't conceive of a scenario whereby they would let her compete as a girl when in fact she's not. Just nonsense.

does that mean she can enter both male and female events.

But thats the thing isn't it, if she chooses to live as a woman, and is half woman and can't help that, then she should be able to run as a woman, unless they start up a complete catergory for hermaphrodites and hormone imbalanced people Roll Eyes

She is nowhere near good enough to compete as a bloke in any case.

so nothing is proven one way or another then, if the events organisers let her run in a womens race, they obviously thought her to be a woman. so who made the allegations that she was a man. If its all false information then she should sue for damages or defamation surely.

on a serious note though how bloody awful for her to have this sort of coverage debating whether she is male or female Disappointed

It would be easier for an older person to take but she's 18 and barely out of a small village in South Africa !

True, but there are tribes, particularly in the South, where a tall, lean, and muscular build is not uncommon.
It's still no excuse for the rather shabby treatment she's been getting; whatever happened to "innocent until proved guilty"?

The Kenyan's tend to be very slim; they're fantastic athletes.
And I agree, it's shabby treatment. But of course, this won't stop the greasy-pole climbing hacks. All they think of is their own notoriety in breaking the "news".

It could make you weep.
