OT - kebab related question.....

Ha! Bet that grabbed your attention...

I have been trying to make doner kebabs at home. I cannot find a decent pitta bread that doesn't crumble and break the instance I cut into it which makes it really hard to put the filling in.

Tesco's are rubbish, as is Morrisons and Budgens.
Can anyone come up with anything useful or a pitta that doesn't break?

Yes but only for a few mins - I can remember when they use to puff up which made it easy to split and fill as you had a pocket.
That doesn't happen anymore..

Co-op wholemeal pittas....couple of minutes in the toaster puff up a treat

No they are fake kebabs really - roasted lamb, lettuce, tomato, red cabbage, red onion. cucumber and chilli sauce.
A tad healthier..

Actually I tell a lie, there isn't doner on there, it must have been elsewhere I saw it (might have been a weightwatchers thing?)

Yaah, it's cool. Just not really a doner unless it's cooked on one of the rotating thingies. It means rotating meat or summat, lol

I've not really experienced any probs with pitta from anywhere. Just don't heat them too long, slice the edge off and open them carefully. Seems to work.

In a vaguely related bread product based experience - I had a 'pizza' the other day which was assembled using a tortilla as the base. And it worked. Good shortcut when you can't be arsed making your own dough.

Brush the pittas with olive oil before putting in the oven (or on BBQ) .....for a lower calorie option ...........olive oil with water .....as long as their dampened.

The best pitta bread are the ones you'd find at a local/ethnic shop. It seems to be the same as the ones they supply to the 'trade'. Look out for a pack with foreign writing on it too...if it's good enough for Greek/Turkish/Lebanese restaurants it's good enough for you Issy

They are LOOVVELY. I have a kebab shop near me that does THEEEEEE nicest chicken kebabs in the world. God knows how they prepare their chicken, it is the softest whitest nicest bits of char grilled chicken breast (never had a bit of fat or gristle or any nasty lumpy bit) with a spicy sauce. Put that with lots of salad and its nearly a health food
