That's a matter of opinion when you're listening to them

I used to think that,

Until that dozy bint in the John Lewis did a radio 2 version of one of their songs.

Then I was converted

Yes ............very unexpected but probably true to the original story. We expect an old hag ........instead we have  a beautiful but deranged (youngish) woman. Brilliant

agree soozy - was  surprised when she appeared but thought it was much better - and does make the whole concept of her a s a  jilted bride more feasible

Remember it's in three parts.

I first saw an adaptation of it years ago when I was a young child. I had no idea of what all the first bit with Magwich in the swamp was all about. I didn't even know that the wild man in the swamp was called Magwich - so when the name cropped up later I had no idea who he was and what he had to do with anything. ) Suffice to say, I am no longer confused over this,

Miss Haversham looks too young.

Thats true. However for some reason I've always found the earlier parts more convincing [ or compelling ] than the end.

I thought 'little' Pip was lovely.  Bigger Pip, not so much.  Yeah, definitely a touch of the 'Keira's', which is unfortunate because she annoys the hell out of me

Thought the ghostly Miss Haversham was most effective on first sighting.

Thought Magwich looked suitably horrific but kept telling myself that is was The Raymond being marvellously menacing.  The Raymond can do no wrong.

Liking this adaptation, but can't help thinking of Alec Guinness whenever Herbert Pocket makes an appearance.

Drummie is a Cad, sir and no good will come of him

I think this adaptation of Great Expectations is great. Ray Winstone was born for the part of Abel Magwitch - I can't think of anyone who could play the part better. Fascinating to see David Suchet as Jaggers, a somewhat different role to that of Poirot.

And Gillian Anderson as Miss Haversham is exceptional. A hypnotically ghostly presence as she almost floats around. There is something of the undead about her as she sucks the lifeforce out of those closest to her.

I've not read this book... from what I've seen that may be a good thing - lots of comments about 'how could they do that to book' etc - but I'm enjoying this.   I'm loving Gillian Anderson too (and Ray, of course) but I see there's a film being made atm with Helena Bonham Carter in the role... to me, she seems to be made for roles like that.
