I think it is the parents responsibility to keep their child out of gangs. Its not a public responsibility. If the parents can't cope then these children should be put into care or even youth detention centres. I came from a gang area & the gov/police bought a policy in that if you knowingly allow your child to continue to participate you (the parent) gets fined. It really helped

i can see this thread is gonna turn into a bit of a debate!

so im going to wash my OH's pregnant mates (6 weeks to go and i cant wait! and no, its not mine!) van and hoover it for her-cos im nice-im doing it for nothing

but no doubt i will be rewarded for my good behaviour later on with a pint of carling

see doing good will reap its rewards-in my case a pint

its all about giving-not just constantly taking..that was end of programme jerry springer bit

But a lot of these kids were born here so have never seen it, unless it was occuring in the home and that could also apply to loads of other kids.
Well, it sounds like there is a particular problem with Somalian gangs, whether they have learnt it in Somalia, or here, they are obviously being drawn into a violent culture.

I don't think trying to break that cycle is a bad idea.

Nor do I as such, but it might have been better to make the trip more inclusive to encourage the Somalian kids to mix more with other kids rather than stay in their own little gangs which is what is the cause of half the problem.

Well, it's only seven, but maybe mixing with police and not seeing them as 'the enemy', will encourage them to mix more and prevent barriers in other situations.

Plus, I presume, the staff at the fishing school.

Mixing the kids is a really good idea.  Peer pressure (or influence) can be a really good thing if it's the right kind of influence.  Especially if the "good" kids are seen as being successful and achieving...it can be aspirational.

Of course it's hard to get the right balance between successful but still on the cool side without slipping over into full blown swot that will get teased.

What a joke, used to make me angry at school when all the naughty kids used to swagger around bragging they got to go on trips for getting into trouble, lthey're being rewarded for it and we've worked hard for what nothing. Something has to be done to keep these kids away from the gangs, it's so easy to be tempted back no matter how hard you try these thugs are so manipulative and nasty and numerous other things have influence so to break the cycle something has to be done to keep them far away from that temptation. Then what would happen to the decent hard working kids no rewards for actually wanting to better themselves in life, but for those who have managed to turn their back on a life a crime and managed to turn their life around I say good on them.

Including other groups is the next step, so may be this is the begining of a long term plan..... and letting them have some one on one time with few coppers will show them that they are not the enemy

All these things have to start somewhere so complaining thats its only for blah blah or such n such doesn't help to create the end product, less gangs memebers less killings. Small steps.

Difficult one this isn't it. I can see both sides of the argument .... but something must lacking in the bad ones lives. They are more than likely from sh!tty backgrounds and had a rough upbringing.

It's not really a reward as such .... but about giving those less fortunate a chance to turn thier lives around.

But I can see why the taxpayer gets hacked off with it too.

Meh. Whilst I admire that at last the Government have woken up being pro-active as opposed to reactive, I dont think 3 days fishing is a great deterrent.

Why not take these kids and show them how others from a minority background have succeeded in life by getting an education and studying?

Most gang members have huge chips on their shoulders and feel that they dont stand a chance. They want the money, big house, nice car etc, but don't think they can ever get it by legal means cos they think the system is against them, and a lot of them feel they are not clever enough, or smart enough to do things the right way, so they turn to gangs and crime to feel respected and accepted. Why not show these kids that their dreams ARE achievable? Send them on inspirational training camps? Everyone is good at something or has something they are interested in, and personally I think they key is to identify this in each kid and work with them on developing it.

Plus this should be a family thing. Parents should be included in some way on these programmes, so that everyone is working together. I'm sure there are programmes like this in place, but unfortunately the media doesn't seem to support this much, instead wanting to highlight how busy Trident are

I dunno, I just think if the kids either already in gangs, or showing signs of gang culture were shown that there are other options and 'the system' DOES want to work with them, it may just help to break the chain.

I'm droning on again.

Hey, we could create a series of awards to celebrate their success and achievements and to provide role models.  All we need is a catchy name.  Something like the GG2 awards, for example.

It isn't only ethnic minorities affected though. So maybe the 'I nearly robbed people but now I'm a mega rich stock broker so don't piss on my parade or I might just cap yo ass' awards?
