I think many people remember where they were when they heard about the assassination. I and my brother were told by our parents when we came down stairs for breakfast on the following morning. As it was a Saturday, we didn't go to school and it was rather a subdued day. Later that day our parents let us watch some television on BBC at 5.15, it was a new drama series for children which became rather popular and still is.

El Loro

It was 3 days after my 7th birthday. I had been to a friends birthday party and tasted peanut butter forthe first time. When I got home from the party the news was all over the telly. I was more excited that my Dad had taken my new Timex (that I'd got for my birthday) and had it engraved with my name on the back.

I remember sombre musicc being played by a pianist all night instead of the scheduled TV programmes.

And 2 of Britain's greatest writers died:

C S Lewis (the Narnia books and many other books)

and

Aldous Huxley (best known for the book Brave New World)

What an interesting coincidence El Loro. The Narnia books were my favourite as a child. I should get around to reading Aldous Huxley, you hear Brave New World mentioned a lot.

Anyone seen Shadowlands  about C S Lewis's great love? What a film.

It was required reading at my school.

I'd like to have seen that. Shadowlands was incredible and I'm quite interested in CS Lewis generally. He briefly went to my brother's school in Belfast.

As a nine year old I returned home from Friday choir practice to find his picture on the tellybox. It was obvious something serious had occurred.
Years later listening to Sheryl Crow, "she was born in November 1963 the day Aldous Huxley died!" Eventually I put two and two together! I had enjoyed Brave New World, and the Devils of Loudon. The film based on the latter was quite unusual. CS Lewis passed me by. I have met many people who seemed to know his Narnia stuff but it wasn't part of my childhood. I did have to sit with m'wife and SIL through the dreary film mentioned above mind.
