JFK was assassinated.
And 2 of Britain's greatest writers died:
C S Lewis (the Narnia books and many other books)
and
Aldous Huxley (best known for the book Brave New World)

I was not born (and it's not often I get to say that these days).
But interesting factoids above.
I think many people remember where they were when they heard about the assassination. I and my brother were told by our parents when we came down stairs for breakfast on the following morning. As it was a Saturday, we didn't go to school and it was rather a subdued day. Later that day our parents let us watch some television on BBC at 5.15, it was a new drama series for children which became rather popular and still is.
I was only 3, so I don't remember anything about the day.
It was 3 days after my 7th birthday. I had been to a friends birthday party and tasted peanut butter forthe first time. When I got home from the party the news was all over the telly. I was more excited that my Dad had taken my new Timex (that I'd got for my birthday) and had it engraved with my name on the back.
I remember sombre musicc being played by a pianist all night instead of the scheduled TV programmes.
I wasn't born either
Its interesting to hear these accounts.
George Clooney [his father was a newsman] is narrating a documentary on the JFK news tonight, on More 4 at 9pm. It clashes with the Jungle but its repeated tomorrow at 10.55 pm - when I'll watch it.

What an interesting coincidence El Loro. The Narnia books were my favourite as a child. I should get around to reading Aldous Huxley, you hear Brave New World mentioned a lot.
Anyone seen Shadowlands about C S Lewis's great love? What a film.

EC I saw the 1993 film version of Shadowlands (Anthony Hopkins & Debra Winger), but there was a 1985 television version (Joss Ackland & Claire Bloom)

I'd like to have seen that. Shadowlands was incredible and I'm quite interested in CS Lewis generally. He briefly went to my brother's school in Belfast.

I was 3 too. I remember seeing the live broadcast. I don't think I normally watched the news at that age. I was probably there because of the Magic Roundabout or Watch with Mother.
anyone watched 'parkland' yet?

No, but I read about it Pirate. There was a tug of war between doctors and the secret service over JFK's body
Also read about the plane journey on the way back. Felt so sorry for Jackie
I wasn't born. But my gorgeous brother in law who sadly died aged 22, celebrated his 1st birthday on this day.
I remember the day so vividly. I was at school and my best friend and me came out to find our mothers in tears when they collected us and told us what had happened. I was obsessed, trying to understand what had happened and how it had affected my parents and their friends so much.

Happy birthday to your bro-in-law passed. These things matter.
I was 11 and remember getting ready for bed when my mother came into my room in tears and told me. We didn't have a television in those days (My pesterpower wasn't sucessful until I was 14), so we hung at every word coming from the wireless.
