...how much of an affinity do Black forum members (and I guess the general public) have to Black housemates?

I'd like people to understand that this is not 'another race thread.' I'm not wishing to discuss racism or anything of the sort but I had to check myself for my response to Cairon when I saw him as I felt a sense of relief, excitement etc... What is this about? Why is this the case?

I'm not saying that I'd support any Black housemate - I loathed Derek Laud and Makosi after a while, but I always feel this sense of excitement when I see a Black housemate. I noticed that there was quite a lot of excitement when Cairon was presented - particlarly by those I THINK are Black forum members. Don't get me wrong - I'm in NO WAY saying that all his supporters are Black - but would be interested in a little light-hearted discussion about this issue. I'll never forget the forums when Makosi was in the house - It was quite incredible.

Yes, I know race discussions have always been a sensitive issue on the forum but I think we can have a constructive exchange about it.

I dunno.. what do y'all think?

I can sort of relate.

I'm white, but I am a walking stick user due to a genetic condition...when I heard about Pete, Mikey, Darnell etc...I did think "oooh great, I wonder how this pans out/how the forumers react/how they are as HMs/ how the public reacts/how will they be/will they challenge preconceptions and stereotypes"

I don't actually favour HMs with disabilities, nor will I blindy defend them...but I do like to see them in the house NO MATTER WHAT they are like...because to me...the more often minorities are on the telly the more "normal" it becomes. The more we see, the less of an issue it is.

And that's what we all want eventually, isn't it? So that eventually no one cares and just judges the HMs for their personalities and the Black/Asian/Gay/Tourettes/Albinsim/Blind/Disabled or whatever...becomes a non issue.

I may have the wrong end of the stick, apologies if I have (I've had a few voddies)

It doesn't matter whether we are black or white as to who we support.

Although I have noticed in years gone by that some people tend to support HM's who come from their area and for no other reson.

Which I think is daft too.

Ah,the Ticklemeister,my favourite housemate ever.

I'm white... I LOVED J.T! I LOVED Science! I LOVED AND LOATHED Victor all at the same time, I HATED Derek lol. I LOVE Cairon, he's awesome!

Now with that said... I am glad this isn't racial and it didn't come across as such either I appreciate the honesty this thread has had.

Now... On another forum someone actually made a thread stating "Cairon will be "The Brotherhood"s favourite!" - Which I was sickened by, tbh.

I'm white and hated Victor, but I also hated Jason, nothing to do with colour. I think Cairon seems like a nice down to earth guy and didn't come accross as being too full of himself in the VT. I prefer Sophia to Sophie, but that's because I liked Sophia's attitude more and I think girls like Sophie are pointless. I don't think that people's colour even registers that quickly with me tbh, unless they make a point of it, like Alex did last year.

I think Cairon is riding on the Science popularity stakes, as alot of people were gutted when he was evicted. And I think he has been brought into the house as Science clone

But you see, I see no similarities whatsoever between Cairon and Science apart from the obvious. The could have, I'm very sure they do, very different personalities.

But to answer your question which I don't think anyone has done lol... I honestly do not think that the race of a HM makes a difference pertaining to the race of the fan(s). Although the way society is still going on nowadays, it is almost always celebrated when a deemed minority makes an appearance on a program such as BB. Whether they be black, asian, cuban, etc.

you will always get the stereotypes liking the stereotypes, it's a comfort zone, somewhere to park themselves.

for example, dale and stu last year, no matter how they came across, there was still the indepth reasoning that 'apart from that...i want them to win cos they are well fit' Laugh

Well I loved Science and I know categorically that I'm not a stereotype Big Grin

No. And I'm not saying I have an affinity at this point - I'm questioning my initial internal response and I'm certainly not saying that he's my favourite - it's far too early for that.

But also disagree.

i meant more the fan wanting the fit bloke or girl to win on looks alone, or the person that may come from their manor. so, some will choose their housemate because of these reasons. whether it is agreeable is not for me to judge, but it is what i feel i have observed in past bb's Smiler

Ah, so you mean the "familiar" rather than the stereotype?

Could you be saying that people like people they can identify with the most? If so, I can totally agree with that.

in a way yeah, but rachael fitted a nice girl next door and everything wholesome stereotype, where as mikey didn't Laugh his stereotypical disability may have contributed to his popularity, but as time went by and we got to know him, his personality made him popular to me.

Yes - I think this is absolutely true and can relate. Having said - I wanted to feed Alex (from last year) to the dogs. I actually couldn't watch it while she was on To say she made my blood boil would be a complete understatement. But yes, I think you have that right.
