It was way before my time but I know that the beatles ruled the 60's but Im guessing this was when the blue and red albums were released.

I dunno..i think they were released a few years earlier .i just know that there were loads of Beatles singles in the charts in 1976/7 cos i can remember hearing them on the chart rundown on a Sunday night.

I think the red album was 1967 - not sure about the blue album off the top of my head.

Well The X Factor is the biggest waste of TV time ever (followed by I'm a Celeb) and The Beatles are very over hyped, so the two go together quite well 

*runs away shrieking in a high pitched squeal*

 

Beatles music lends itself rather well to bland interpretation and every-man performances.  "I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends" and "Get Back" being karaoke stand bys on par with "My Way". 

Yellow Submarine, Octopus Garden, When I'm 64, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Lovely Rita, Maxwell's Silver Hammer?  Let's be honest, all jolly sing-a-long nursery rhyme style songs that wouldn't sound out of place in the Jedward repertoire. 

No need to get all precious about the Beatles, they did lots of stuff that's absurdly over-rated and some stuff, such as those mentioned above that are little more than glorified nursery rhymes.  Nothing wrong with catchy tunes for the preteens- but it's best not to be too pretentious about these and to elevate them to a status above Aqua's "Barbie Girl" or Joe Dolce's "Shut Uppa Your Face".

I would agree to an extent, however you had to be there in the early sixties to appreciate what an effect they had. Don't forget all we had was shieght like Anne Shelton, Elvis, and Cliff. Some of their stuff, obviously it won't be featured on the bland  X-Factor, was ground-breaking. Unlike the examples you give they wrote music and played instruments.

True, but the Spice Girls had a similar effect in the mid-nineties, you don't see X Factor doing a 'Spice Girls' week do ya? Bliddy, biased Simon Cowell

Carnelian I got into the Beatles during  a very rough time in my life and their music means the world to me, 
If I am "precious" about their music then so be it.
But I am not going to watch the programme because I know I will get upset.

OMG I have heard it all now, people on this thread comparing the spice girls, jedward and aqua to the beatles. Are you people serious? How old is everyone on here?
You have to remember what they did, they did in ONLY 6 YEARS. And look at the way they changed their music. Listen to a hard days night album and then listen to the revolver album and you will see a total difference in the music. And they were only released two years apart from each other.

Fair enough, I was only trolling a smidgen anyway and wasn't specifically having a pop at you. 

A lot of people say the same about good old Morrissey and The Smiths.  I have more Smiths records in my collection than I do Beatles - more Jesus and Mary Chain also . 

But anyway, since the Beatles are regarded as 'the best ever' by so many, then if you don't think they're 'the best ever' then you're going to regard them as over rated. 

I get the Beatles and they've written and performed many fine songs, but they are over rated - IMO and some of those songs like Octopus Garden are just cheesy and are no better than novelty records.

In a way it's a compliment to say that an artist's music is the sort of music that lends itself to interpretation bland or otherwise because it means it is versatile and well written.  Beatles music is the sort of music that can be accommodated by the X Factor.

ClumsyCat mentioned "Heroes" by Bowie, but that is Bowie's song and the reason is because of Bowie's anguished, out of tune vocals and the feedback drenched instrumentation.  Imagine that on the X Factor!  The anguished vocals would be replaced by emphasise on being in a 'range' and the feedback stripped out thus destroying the whole  essence and passion of the song.  Destroying the passion and essence of music is Simon Cowell's raison d'être 

Oh God Carnelian... I cannot tell you how bad it is.  

And what gets me is that people who know no better will think it good.

I feel a bit about the Smiths as you do the Beatles - yes they did some great stuff, but they did some doozers too.

LOL, I'm not comparing the Beatles to Jedward and Aqua, I'm just pointing out that not everything the Beatles wrote was wonderful.  I'm sure Jedward would have sold their souls to have written "Yellow Submarine" and "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" but then Jedward are utterly devoid of talent.

I'm not disputing that they wrote and performed some great songs but what I am saying is that some of the Beatles more duff, novelty output is no better than other duff novelty output. 

As for the Spice Girls, I understand your complaints there.  The Spice Girls did nothing for the development of music other than shift vast amounts of product.  Gerri Halliwell can prattle on as much as she likes in that self important, pretentious way of hers about what great feminist icons they were but she's talking out of her arse.

Not a fan of Bowie's "Heroes"?  It's one of my all time faves, but you do have to 'get' it.

I have lukewarm opinions about the Smiths, although I liked them I was never one of those hearing aid wearing, bicycling wannabe Morrissey nerds.  They made music to a fairly consistent standard, although I agree there are some stinkers as well. 

We'll have to wait and see what they do with Beatles stuff. My guess is they'll do ok.  It's hard to murder a Beatles song because many of them stand up in their own right and in any style.  I'm sure they'll cut off the rough edges a bit and make them more banal but As I said, that's why God (or Satan) must have put Simon Cowell on this Earth!

In my view, Beatles stuff lends itself to interpretation because of the song writing and arrangements can be adapted easily to other styles, which is why so many artists cover Beatles records.  That's my view anyway.

Yellow submarine was meant to be a duff childrens song. It was written in under half an hour by paul mccartney and was written for ringo starr. It takes an artist four years to come up with one album, but the beatles produced revolver, sgt pepper, the white album and abbey road all within four years and all are world class albums.
