Lancashire County Counil have cut my brothers salary by ÂĢ4,000 and hes got 28 days to decide to agree with it or he's pretty much sacked... meanwhile my Dad who also works for the council, his pay has effectively gone up. Been bickering all evening on the phone

What do the union say?
The usual, think he was told to not sign anything. Probably be a meeting sometime next week.
It's a bugger for the young isn't it? Anyone of the correct age prays everyday that the employer will try something like that!
What a shame.... I think there will be a lot more of this sort of thing before it get better.....
Shocking but ..................it's not your Dads fault. They really shouldn't fall out over it ...............would your brother prefer that your Dad take a voluntary pay cut ot kick up a stink? Blame the people responsible - don't fall out with your family.

Meaty : I'm assuming that this is due to NJC single status job evaluation scheme? Is your brother going to appeal?
GJ: If it is then the union will have been part of the decision making as the rationale behind the scheme is to ensure equal pay

Do you know more about this particular situation? I was just analysing it at face value.
In my experience, albeit from years gone by, contracted people never have a salary cut of four grand. The job might, but the individual doesn't.

It is a bit different to the 'norm' GJ. The employers and unions sit together to analyse, in v fine detail, the roles and responsibilities attached to each job and then moderate, across the Local Authority, all of the different jobs to ensure equality of pay. Some jobs have therefore been downgraded and others upgraded, which is why I assume that the situation Meaty refers to is re the job evaluation process. I think I'm right in saying that the whole process started as a result of low paid workers, particularly women, making claims against LAs re inequality of pay, leading to joint working between the employers and the unions to ensure fair and equitable salaries.
I see. (said the blind man) When situations like this occured in my previous large employer, no-one ever lost money per se. There would be a long period of no pay grade rises. I'm sure that even within a collective bargaining scenario an individual would still be able to use the Union to object, appeal, or whatever.
Moin btw!

Absolutely GJ, there is an appeal process. Morning to you tooNice day, I have my niece staying for a few days, we're going to go out for a nice long walk , maybe see if the daffs are out at Farndale? ...And if they're not at least the people won't be out
Good idea! They aren't out here. But shouldn't be long. There are snowdrops all over the place.
Which is the bliss of solitude............ etc.
And then my heart with pleasure fills..
..Until I see the final demand bills.
