I'm baby sitting my grand son today - he's turned up and guess what? CHICKEN POX!! I've never had it - no point in turning him away I've been with him most of the week and it's most contagious before it comes out.

I'm a bit worried for my mum TBH - she has had chicken pox many years ago but I know you gan get it twice.

What should I do? Cancel Christmas? My middle son will be here for Christmas and he's not had it either although he didn't catch it when his partner had it last year

Aw no.. poor wee soul.   Isn't it right that adults who've had chicken pox are more likely to get shingles if they're exposed again?    Rotten timing, Soozy.    Are they still contagious when the spots are out?      Just make sure your if your Mum does come she gets the doc right away if she feels ill - you can get anti virals now for shingles, but you need to take them really early I think.

What rotten timing for your grandson to get Chickenpox now.

Chickenpox are most contagious before the spots appear and until the spots crust over (usually takes about 5/6 days), so he will still be infectious on Christmas Day, unfortunately.

As Slinki mentioned, people on steriods need to avoid Chickenpox, as should pregnant women who've never had it and people with weakened immune systems.

Plenty of calamine lotion on the spots should help dry them up quickly, Soozy. Hope the wee soul isn't too itchy and uncomfortable.

Women who are pregnant who have been exposed to chicken pox and haven't had it before should seek advice from their doctor or midwife immediately. Chickenpox during pregnancy can cause complications for either the mother or baby, but the risk of complications is low. Most pregnant women who get chickenpox recover, with no adverse effects on the baby.

That's from the NHS advice website.

awwww Soozy... this is seriously crappy timing.

Hope the lil un is coping ok with it.   I bloody hate chicken pox!    I had it at 18 and it was horrible (I caught it off a boy with shingles)...    my kids had it at 18mths & 6 yrs...   the boy (18mths) had it baad..   if they are still in nappies then its so difficult to deal with.

As for you & your boy..   it does sound as if the pair of you have natural immunity

Ohdear- not good - my mum has emphesyma and takesvariousinhalers (I think there may besteroids in them). I'm in areal dilemma . I may ring my mums doctor to get advice!

Edited to say - just rung the docs they're gonna get back to me.

Space bar seems to be a bit sticky - sorry  Or maybe I'm typing like I'm thinking without pausing to draw breath!

No probs slinki .......................docs have rung me back - they said as long as she's 100% positive that she has had chicken pox before then there's no problem. I will take them at their word but I'm a bit nervous as I know several people who have had it twice .

Bugger it - I think we'll take our chances

Both my sons have had ChickenPox in the past two months.  The eldest had them first but it was over 3 weeks before the youngest sons came out.  I had to keep both kids away from my Mum who was on steroids for COPD and also away from the Sis-in-law who is pregnant but the Doc did say that anyone who has already had them should be ok as when you've had them once the immune system builds up it's own immunity to further attacks, however, if someone only had a mild case of pox as a child it can occur in adult life again and would be a lot worse.

I don't know about cancelling Christmas Sooz, but if you are worried then it might be best for all to just have their own xmas in their own homes and then maybe do something altogether when the wee one is better?  Such a shame though that he has them now, hope he doesn't become too ill with them for Santa coming.  My eldest had them down his throat and was quite ill but my youngest, who already has severe eczema, barely mentioned them when he had them.
