Well not really odd as such but surprising. We ended up in a French cafe/restaurant in the arse end of nowhere one wet Sunday afternoon starving and wanting our dinner. The whole village was in there eating- rather Royston Vasey with garlic tbh.

I ordered snails in garlic to start and luvverly they were too. One thing on the menu we couldn't figure out - even the two bona fide chefs we had with us were stumped. Madame's English was even worse than our French but she gamely flapped her arms and shouted "Beeeg cheeeken". We nodded in understanding and ordered the turkey.

When it arrived turkey it certainly wasn't. A beautifully cooked loin of rich dark meat, rare and juicy. We hadn't a clue what it was but it was divine. When we got home a few days later we learned we'd had ostrich - "beeg cheeeken" my arse!

And another odd one from France ... jeez they eat everything!!

We were on holiday and got chatting to the French woman next door. She brought round this plate filled with the smallest shells cooked in garlic and butter and onions - those tiny pink and fawn butterfly shells you see strewn across every beach which they'd picked for free obviously and cooked. Like tiny tiny mussels ....
