To be honest it was a vague attempt at being polite

(Just so I don't totally take up that other thread with my own opinions)

Does anyone else remember what Leeds was like in the early seventies? Stained from many chimleys, a city on it's arse, closed down arcades, buses filled with cigarette smoke. If you were a female patient you were quite likely to be touched up by a certain porter. If you were a male student you were quite likely to become stuck in a lift. Mention Man Ray to the locals and they thought it probably a suburb out by Seacroft. The nearest cocktail bar was in London, etc. I once had to be repatriated.

I never knew Leeds at all until my daughter went to Uni there in 2001. I had visions of a very bleak/depressing place. I fell in love with it - I think it's a lovely city.

It is now!

A lot of these old West Riding places have scrubbed up well.
