I saw on the tele yesterday that there are new laws currently under consideration for dog owners, which are:

  • Every dog must be microchipped
  • Every dog is insured against attacking or biting people
  • Every owner should go through a 'test' to ensure that they are capable of keeping a pet

Hmmm. I agree with the chipping (and need to get mine done). Re the insurance, not sure tbh. My dog is a guard dog and there are signs at the front and back of my property telling people this.

I was told by the police that if you have a dog on the premises and do not have signs up, if a burglar breaks into your home and gets bitten by the dog the dog can be destroyed (and burglar can sue the owner) - how mental is that? But apparently it's because there was no prior warning. (Maybe I need to put a sign up saying 'enter this house unvited and you'll get shagged with a breadknife' just to make sure I'm covered too then)

My dog wears a Halti when he's out (again, I was advised that cos he is classed as a 'dangerous dog' not to wear one is against the law). I dont encourage him to bite people but if I were put in a situation whereby I was unable to defend myself then damn right I'd remove the Halti and let him at 'em.

In regards to the 'theory' test. What a load of rubbish. This will not ensure that every owner is responsible - besides, how would they police this?

These laws are being brought in to apparently try to reduce the amount of bad owners and dogs being used for the wrong purposes. I think that there should be a system similar to a car registration system - if you are a dog owner your details should be registered on a database, the police should be able to stop you at any time they like and check this, and if you're not registered, then you're either too lazy or have something to hide. They could do a nationwide campaign on the tele, radio and through people's doors, advising them that if they are a dog owner they need to register their pet by such and such date. And the police will be doing spot checks. Of course I dont know if the problem is big enough to warrant the spend on a marketing campaign of that scale, but I think it's a system that could potentially work.

What do you reckon?

i agree there should be something in place....most vets do the mircochipping in with the first jabs when you get a puppy so thats no problem, I have insurance for the dog and it covers loads (only ÂĢ10 a month from Tesco) not sure if it covers biting but given that Ruby has never even growled unless playing and Is more likely to lick soeone into submission I can't foresee that being a problem.  As for testing owners on their suitability thats a no no for starters....if its not done for having kids then why should it be done for dogs...and who would 'police' it? What would their criteria be? Some poeple think keeping dogs outside is not suitable and yet theres nothing wrong with it at all...supposing yu had so right on animal rights type policing it..no-one would be allowed to have a dog!

My dog is micro chipped it's the first thing I did when I got her from the rescue home. She is insured but I don't know if it includes biting. But she is more likely to hug people to death than bite them. She is never allowed off her lead and I really hate people who let theirs run at you like a maniac while laughing and saying "He's only being friendly" while its frothing at the mouth and clearly about to rip me or my dog apart.

Our law-makers really need a reality check.
Even the most placid dog might bite a burglar, if they felt threatened by a stranger entering their home. The Law really is an ass, at times.

My dog is microchipped and insured, so I have no issue with those parts of the proposals. I'm not sure about the suitability test, it would depend what it involves.

I am with you Lazybug. I called the council to remove 5 piles of shit outside my home. My dog is like yours Yogi she only goes in her own garden but I always have pockets full of poop bags just in case. I think the person who lets their dog go outside my house must do it at night but I think the dog must be the size of an elephant judging by the turds.

Can't see it working thought tbh
i hope they can find a way of sorting it out though

i live 5 mins walk away from a park which i am scared to take my puppy to - we went once and came across a few of these dogs running around - it wasnt just teen owners either

a little dog was killed in our area last week while being taken out by its owner (on the lead) a loose "bull terrier" type dog got hold of it - the owner could do nothing

instead of walking to our local park - i take a 20 min drive to a more "dog friendly" park

i used to have an English Bull Terrier who was a softy in the house but hated other dogs (he only liked those he had known since he was a pup), but we just wouldnt let him off his lead when any other dogs were around, despite this people would let their dogs run up to him and when I asked them to get their dogs they would say "its okay he/she only wants to play"    its irresponsible owners that are the problem and something needs to be done about it

It is, and something needs to be done but i dont think these laws will do much about it. Those who arent very good dog owners wont bother with it all.

Like that breed of dog that was banned in this country yet in the rough areas of cities you still see them, if they cant enforce that how do they expect to enforce any of these laws?

also, it is part of "the deal" when you get a dog from Dogs Trust that you have it spayed or neutered

banning "puppy farms" and irresponsible breeding could help - there are so many beautiful dogs and rescue centres already needing homes without them breeding more, our local council dog pound was full of staffordshire bull terriers   its so sad, its not the dogs fault, again its the owners and greedy breeders

Hmmm, lots of people can't afford to get their dogs micro-chipped...have you been to the Vets lately? Maybe they should think about moderating Vets Fees before they start imposing stupid Laws upon people...I can only imagine implementing this Law would cause folks who can't afford Insurance and Micro-chipping to abandon their pets....

ANY dog is capable of 'snapping' and biting someone, depends on the situation IMO. When we were kids, our dog Brinny (RIP) bit my Cousin, why? because he kept blowing in her face, served him right, (he also got a clout of his Mum :laugh...she was the softest dog as well....his fault for pestering her...

I've been bit, nearly lost my finger (it's still crooked and I haven't got full movement in it), I leaned over my Friends garden wall chatting to him and dangled my arms over, the dog must've got a fright and did what comes naturally I guess (it was an English Bull Terrier,) they don't let go either....what could I do? The dog was protecting it's property and I should've been more careful !!!

I let my dog off the lead, though if I see others approaching I put her back on it...how the hell are they going to Police this? They can't even catch folks who let their dogs shit everywhere!!

Another way of raising revenue in some shape or form, and another way of controlling us...

hi DID

yes, i went to the vets last week cos my pup had an itchy ear - the standard "steroid injection", ear drops and ÂĢ51 bill with a "come back a week today and we will see if she is ok" - i cancelled the next appointment cos she is fine and i dont need to be charged ÂĢ30 to be told that

there are charities and some councils do "offers" on microchipping

Blimey barney, that's alot. That's my point, even though people love their pets (well, most people), it can get expensive and people just cannot afford it. I know you can get insurance, but I understand you have to pay the initial outlay and claim back the money, not alot of folks can afford that either....

I think every dog should be DNA tested so when there's a huge pile of shit on my front lawn (just like there is right now ) or every 5th step I take down my road I can have the shit tested then track that sodding dog owner down and shove that said dog shit in their letter box!
Or do what I did, I waited until I saw who kept letting their dog shat outside my gate, scooped it up in a bag, knocked on their door and shoved it in their faces with a few choice words...I also told them if it happened again, I wouldn't be handing it back to them in a bag, but off the end of a shovel..

...seems to have done the trick

These were middle-aged 'respectable' folks, not kids You know the type who shout at kids for dropping litter..but can't clean up after their own dogs

i know it is the vet i have been with for years but they have recently been taken over

i am gonna change cos when pup had been spayed her scar became infected and she was in pain - i phoned the "out of hours" number - they said i would have to put her in the car and drive her 30 miles to their emergency surgery - she was whimpering sitting at home

besides that they said they would charge me an initial call out of ÂĢ50 plus any treatment and would probably just put her in a t-shirt to stop her licking her wound

i am looking around now for a new vet with local out of hours just in case

Maybe an IQ test, before you are allowed to buy a dog?

There was a dog outside our house earlier, running around in the road, stopping traffic, a woman looking scared and a man trying to get it off the road.

I went to get some food from the kitchen, as I thought it might help to get off the road, but when I got out there, the bloke was wandering down the road, holding a lead, the dog was running along the pavement, loose, ran up to another dog that a woman was taking for a walk. She was panicking, the bloke eventually sauntered up and put it back on its lead, and then just walked off.

Twat owners! (no offence to wimmin)
