I wouldn't say he is in particular. I suppose the P&P thing 20 years ago got a lot of women in hot flushes and the Radio Times in a lather but other than that, meh! He is a good actor beyond Mr Darcy, but I don't think he comes close to that national treasure thing that such people as David Attenborough have.
I still say Brian May, astronomer, very intelligent man, very thoughtful man, key guitarist in a much-loved band (personally, I'm not a fan of Queen or Brian May's guitar playing for that matter but millions are) environmental campaigner, animal rights campaigner. An outspoken voice on social issues.
Gets my vote!
Not really my thing but can't deny the talent
Now Carny - i did say a huge talent, admired for their work 'may' not meet the criteria.
Is he a household name - adored by young and old alike, viewed with warmth and a smile by the majority?
Brain May ... Respect - yes but not a household name viewed with 'warmth'
What do others think?

I know what you mean, but we're at the end of 'not really quite a national treasure' end of 'national treasures'!
This isn't my taste but Queen, Abba and the Beatles are probably the most popular bands with the public in general. I would say Brian May if he isn't household name, is pretty close to being one. Most people know who Brian May is.
I just respect him as an intelligent guy and as an ethical guy. I'm not even a Queen fan. I don't think Brian May probably does qualify but he's not far off IMO.
Considering Colin Firth is in the mix! Definitely Brian May before Colin Firth!
We have to consider Paul McCartney - Macca if he hasn't been mentioned already.
What about Nicholas Parsons? - legend!

Kenneth Williams has been dead since the mid-80s if I recall. Nicolas Parsons and Leslie Philips are still alive.
