He has a very long tail which he wags so hard it makes his whole body wag with it and he keeps whacking it against walls and splitting it open. My house looks like a CSI crime scene with the amount of blood spatter on the walls everyday. The vet says the only thing we can do is to cut most of his tail off. Poor little Wilfy doesn't seem to have much luck or sense really. I don't want it chopped off because it expresses such a lot of his personality but I don't want it getting infected either.

I think all pups now do. We've had ours over 4 yrs when it was the norm for them to be done as pups.
Wilfred's a spanador. He's only 7 months old and so cute.
Poor Wilfy - is that really the last resort

Spanadors are VERY cute.
Iâve two springers, both docked - the eldest is a retired working dog.
Sorry, I keep trying to put a photo of him up and can't do it.
Lady P, that's what the vet says, I'm trying to think of another solution but I just can't find an alternative. I've even tried wrapping his tail in a sock but he wags it off in seconds.

Am I the only one who had to google spandor
Is there anyway you could bandage it ?

I've tried but he just manages to wag it straight off again.

Aw donât feel guilty about it hon, he wonât be annoyed with you.
It would cruel to leave him in pain and at risk of infection, and heâll still be just as gorgeous
I hope you manage to get a pic uploaded, would love to see him.

I know, they are quite timid aswell. Its surprising how many people are scared of them when you walk them though!

The first dog I was ever scared of (when I was about five and had never had a dog of my own) was a boxer called Rex, who lived in my street. Whenever he saw me, he would come bounding up and chase me down the road.
I was terrified of him and always legged it whenever I saw him. Then one day he caught me up and knocked me over, and I lay there waiting to be eaten. He didn't eat me - he slobbered all over my face
I wasn't scared of him after that

Yeah his tail is really long. The vet will probably only remove the sore/infected part, heâll still have a fair tail!
Lil Pookie can fit dat tail in his mouth
When my Labrador used to wag its tail it used to follow all the way through his body to his nose. It was like a sideways Mexican wave. He could clear the coffee table with his tail. I dont like tail docking but i also dont like to see a dog injure its self and if the vet says its for the best you should have it done.

That's what I'm hoping, but the vet says that because he's such a happy and, ahem, 'stupid' dog, it might be better to take more off than is necessary to prevent it happening again. Wilf is one of those dogs who doesn't seem to feel pain. He ate 4kg of food the other week which was so much it would have burst his gut if we hadn't got him to the vet quickly. He was still recovering from major surgery on his gut after swallowing a pillowcase. You'd think that once you got so full your gut felt like it was going to burst you'd stop eating wouldn't you, but not our Wilfy, he just kept on going.
There was a dog on telly who ate a whole packet of The Pill
Vet just sed, "He'll be ok - don't worry"
And sent them home !!!

The vet wants to fully dock it but I'm going to suggest he takes about a quarter to a third and we'll just have to hope it's ok from there. So far last month Wilfred's vet bill was just under ÂĢ1000, so I should probably go with the vets advice but I would rather let him keep as much of it as we can.
Racing greyhounds are prone to this...the old fashioned remedy (which works) is to go to a pharmacy and buy some Potassium Permanganate (Cody's Crystals)...make up a solution of it and dip the dogs tail in it...it hardens it up and protected it from injury.

Ooh, thanks for this. I'll give this a try first and see if it works.
