Hello lovely FM's!

I'm really excited! A few months ago my fella asked me how i would feel about doing a 'banger rally' across Europe..i was dubious to say the least but thought 'oh well its something different' and signed up for it - its called The Scally Rally and basic the rules are to aquire a car for no more than ÂĢ100, chav/scally it up so it looks like a proper state then proceed to go across Europe in it!

We leave on 11th June to get to Calais, then we shall head to Basel in Switzerland, through the swiss lakes and the swiss alps pass then onto the famous Stelvio pass (always on top gear!) travelling through the Domolomite mountains...then eventually travel into Italy passing Venice and ending up in Rimimi for the end of rally party!

We are taking a full day then in Italy to work our way back to Venice to catch our flight home, retiring the scally car in the sunshine for the rest of its days!

So there you go - does that sound like fun to you?? Has anyone been to Swizerland and could advise how expensive it is (i've heard its really expensive!) and what to see in Venice also..?

Sounds wonderful!!

Haven't been to Switzerland or Venice for years but I believe they are both expensive.
Trip in gondola a bit of a rip-off unless you are a real romantic. Vaporettos or water buses much easier way to travel.
Take time to explore the little back alleys on foot as well - great atmosphere. Avoid St Mark's Square for something to eat, but go up tower if you get the chance.

What car are you taking and will it get you that far?

we've got an old M reg Peugot 405 diesel - its been well cared for by its previous owners and we are driving it around from now to flag up any issues with it but its just passed its MOT and had a few things fixed so we are hopeful!

Yes! Well done to Mummy Mazz. Driving in Europe, like fishing, flying, camping, and holidaying on the Iberian peninsula, is something I have only done once. Never again! :nails: She is very brave.
Careful if he asks you to fix his banger, mind!!

I've just consulted with the car oracle (my dude!) and he says it would depend on the car but he would imagine ÂĢ50 max ?

ÂĢ50...blimey....always something isn't there!!! Suppose I'll have to get it done soon though!!!! Grrrrr! Big Grin

oooh I think it sounds like a great adventure.. Big Grin

am sure you'll have a wonderful time.. Thumbs Up

Agree with others about Venice. .stick to the back alleys, they are much cheaper.. you may want to go see the Glass blowers as well.. round the back of St Marks Sq.

(is not admitting to graffitiing my name up to top of the Campanelli tower many moons ago .. Glance )

as for Switzerland.. get a couple of cool boxes full of food and a load of flasks with hot drinks before crossing the border. .that should see you thru to the other side. .V expensive but the scenery is gorgeous.. Wink

my sort of holiday adventure mmaz Thumbs Up
have driven to french ski resort on my own in an old banger. buy a french/italian car, breakdowns and parts are cheaper.
stopped off at premier inn type place on the way - haven't a clue about prices now tho.
my nerves were shattered crawling up a mountain road in 2nd gear following a coach billowing(sp) out exhaust smoke!!! ...and breathe...
the temperature gauge was going up and up.. steam creeping out.. coach in front.. ten cars behind!!!!!!
finally got to a level road bit, pulled over and let the steam steeeaaaaammmmm!!!
i had water but plenty of snow around - the car was a fiat, a mechanical old thing with no fussy electrics and gadgets that can drain - it even had tinfoil bit in fusebox, that i sometimes jiggled to get the starter motor to work!
i would never have bothered if i didn't have aa euro cover.
went to geneva to pick-up mates then onto chamonix. drove down through spectacular country, did overnights, but again prices were a few decades ago. why don't you take camping gear?

wow Bozzi!! that sounds amazing! I hope we have some fun times like that - as there's 100 cars going i'm assuming that we'll (hopefully) help others out en route and vice versa but i think EU cover is a must - just incase!
We've already paid the hotels, for 4 of us the whole trip inc spends will be about 250 each - thats ferry, diesel, hotels, food and misc .. we're staying in budget hotels but we aren't that bothered - just a place to rest our heads before starting a new day of adventure... xx

went to val d'isere first, top resort for me!

better still mmaz, take some spare motor parts with you, if you think certain things could go.

Nod I stayed in Chamonix, right at the foot of Mont Blanc, the views in the Morning as the Sun was rising are truly breathtaking! Nod

Sounds like a great lark. I always fancies driving across Europe (thogh not in an old banger).

My parents live in Switzerland and I go a few times a year. In the past I'd say thet prices wern't that bad as long as you stay out of the really expensive places, but the Swiss Franc is so strong at the moment it makes everything expensive. Stick to the pizza and pasta for a cheaper meal and buy your booze and fags in France before hand. Hotels I couldn't guess as I aways stay with Ma n Pa.

I don't know your route, but there is a terrific drive around the lake to Lausanne and Montreax is really picturesque.
