That boat looks so tiny on the ocean

Very small boat in a very big ocean.

As I've said previously, though, it really does ram home just how incredible these voyages (and the sailors who made them) were in the age of sail.

I've been on the replica of John Cabot's ship, the Matthew, and that's only 24m long. Just think about that sailing across the Atlantic and back!

Off Topic: Did anyone see Nicola Sturgeon have a to and fro with the other ladies of the Scottish Assembly today on the news?

One of them told her to sit down as she was standing up.  Cracking stuff.

That was my Ruth! (Ruth Davidson, leader of the Scottish Conservatives) Way to go girl!

I RL lolled when Sturgeon sat back down when Ruth told her to.

It was a great bit of theater and NS did not look too impressed - no Christmas cards there me thinks.

That must have been interesting to visit Eugene

It's a real eye-opener, Roger. On the one hand, you appreciate that these ships were the cutting-edge of technology at the time, but on the other you can't get over just how small and cramped they were, and just how flimsy they appear against the vastness of the ocean.

Ant is sounding a bit arrogant

Maybe, but he is the only one with the survival training and experience.

No matter how realistic they try to make it, a modern-day crew will still be aware that they've got a support boat behind them packed with antibiotics and other wonders of modern science. It can therefore be difficult for them to fully appreciate just how dangerous what they're doing actually is, and that puts them at risk of taking unsafe risks.
