I can still remember all the fuss over the cooper v clay match. People were  interested in boxing and he was quite the hero here. I dare say he was more popular in the UK than he was in the US. Probably the greatest sportsperson ever.

 

Alas! I know a lot of younger people who will be rushing to a local pub to make sure that no-one had him in a double with Dave Swarbrick in their competition.

Funnily enough, I'm off to see "Race" (the Jesse Owens biopic) tonight, and that got me thinking. The mere fact that I'm having to look back to the 1930s (before Ali was even born) for anyone in the same league gives some indication of just how impressive Ali was.
