I thought that MP's salaries and rises were now decided by an independent panel. If true then it's not the MP's who are asking for it (unless an MP has gone on record as saying they want it).

I concur. But for a few, like Dennis Skinner, they're not about to object to it.

he may be to you...but to me he's head and shoulders above the rest in principles...he claims the least expenses of any other MP and only through illness misses a vote. Give me him a million times over to what we have in there now on all sides

I'm not a Labour supporter, but I have the greatest respect for Dennis Skinner, the only man with principles in that den of placemen

I agree Kaytee...it doesn't matter what party you support... you can see a man of principles and he has them in bucket loads
They are a detached elite that has become untouchable. The more scrutiny they come under the more self serving, brazenly hypocritical and dishonest they look. They look that way because they are that way.
An MP should be a vocation to serve the country, like being in the NHS and military are supposed to be. Not a meal ticket or stepping stone to fatcat pay in industry.
Spot on.

exactly..and as far as I can see, only Skinner fits the bill at this time.

Yeah, once upon a time MP's used to do the job cos they believed in it. Not for what they could get out of it

Oddly, the MPs' panel suggests a whacking pay rise while the government decides all other public sector workers should have their salaries frozen.
Considering the Coalition think Labour wrecked the economy (they didn't) and Labour think the Coalition are currently wrecking the economy (they are); Perhaps an independent panel of economists, social workers, trade unionists, business leaders, police chiefs, judges, health professionals should be sitting on the panel.
Better than a bunch of idiots who think that just because bankers and lawyers have got fat pay rises, and MPs claim they can be hotshots in the City, MPs should therefore be treated as if they already have those jobs and are entitled to those rewards.

Yeah, well if Carnellian can find 2 economists to agree, a couple of trade union Tsars with an ounce of pure altruistic integrity and a gaggle of Circuit Judges that can see beyond their noses then he might be on to something.

You're right EC, it was just on the news saying they DIDN'T want it, but their review body was possibly going to give it to them anyway! Apparently the body considers that their pay is falling behind!!!! Sack the reviw body, I say.
One MP, when asked if he was going to 'give his pay rise away' on the radio tonight, said "no, because of tax reasons." Whatever that means
Probably meaning that he'll still be taxed on X thousand pounds even if he only kept X-10 thousand pounds.

Means he's ferreting money off somewhere I guess
Don't agree with their salaries either. I blame Jimmy Hill

No, the people who should sit in judgement on MPs are those best placed to see the social and economic consequence of their actions.

The alternative? A panel from the 'the great and the good' will look at salaries for 'executive positions' and the whining from MPs who claim they can earn big bucks in London's elite job market and then decide their salaries based on those claims.
Firms are full of people who 'could earn more money in x job at x firm'. Do bosses pay attention to such 'grass is always greener' claims? Mostly they treat those claims as idle bullshit. MPs are free to seek their imagined fortune outside Parliament. They're not doing us any favours by being MPs. Most of them are time serving hacks in safe seats where a hat-stand could be elected provided it had the right colour rosette.
personally i think 99% of them are w@nkers and dont deserve they money they get now let alone a rise
until they do their job properly i shall continue to have this opinion
that is all
