I absolutely loved Escape from Alcatraz , there's a documentary about it on ch5 tonight.. Other true story prison films which i have enjoyed are McVicar and Buster.

On ITV3 very late tonight is a film worth watching if you havent already 'Inside i'm Dancing' set in Dublin about a young man with Cerebral Palsy...bloody good film IMO.

If its comedy youre after then try Weird Science.....lol.

One of the best films I have ever seen was 'A matter of life and death' which is a very old David Niven film.
This is also one of my all time favourites . It was directed by Michael Powell (in 1946) who I have always considered to be this country's greatest film director. Besides David Niven, it also starred Roger Livesey and Kim Hunter who years later played Zira in Planet of the Apes. In the States this film was released under the title Stairway to Heaven.

My two other favourite Powell films are:
I know where I'm Going (1945). This stars Roger Livesey and Wendy Hiller. I reckon this is the only British romantic comedy from that time which equals American classics such as It Happened One Night.

And
A Canterbury Tale (1944). This is my all time favourite film and I have seen it many times. It seems a strange film, superifically about 3 people who work together to track down the man who at night goes round pouring glue onto local girls' hair. And if that there was all to the film, it would be stupid. But it is a multi-layered film. It is set in the middle of World War 2, and of the 3 people, 1 is a Land-Girl, 1 is a British soldier, and 1 is an American GI (played by John Sweet who was a serving US army sergeant at the time serving in the UK - his only film). Although the war is always in the background, it is not a war film as such. The main people in the film are each facing some sort of personal crisis, and the film is a composite of their stories, and for each of them the film is an account of what is effectively their pilgrimage through the crisis leading to a resolution by the end of the film. But there is also a poignancy to the film as it is also a tribute to the pastoral beauty of the English countryside and the way of life as it was, which Powell sensed was passing away with the war, and that life would never be the same again.

There is no real connection with Chaucer's stories other than right at the beginning of the film where we see a group of Chaucer's pilgrims on their way to Canterbury. One of them a falconer releases his falcon into the sky and we see the falcon soaring away. And then in a split second the image of the falcon flying in replaced by a bomber and we are in modern times. That scene has to have been the source for Stanley Kubrick's 2001 in the scene where the bone thrown by a caveman soaring through the sky is replaced by a space craft.

I know I have gone into some detail about a Canterbury Tale, but I have given nothing away, and it would help anyone who wishes to see this film to have an idea as to what this film is really about.
