The Scottie dog was the clear favourite with fans from more than 120 countries who took part in the contest to decide which token should be saved, eventually securing 29% of the vote.

While the shoe, wheelbarrow and iron were neck and neck in the final hours of voting, the iron ended up with just 8% of the vote and will now be retired from the game.

"While we're a bit sad to see the iron go, the cat token is a fantastic choice by the fans and we have no doubt it will become just as iconic as the original tokens," said Eric Nyman from Hasbro.

The iron was one of the original game tokens introduced by the Parker Brothers in 1935, when the appliance was an important part of domestic life. The Scottie dog and wheelbarrow were added in the early 1950s.

Previous tokens retired in the 1950s included a lantern, a purse and a rocking horse.

The new cat design received 31% of the total vote and will be added to the existing tokens which include a race car, thimble, top hat, and battleship.

Versions of Monopoly with the new token will come out later this year.

RIP Iron. I will always remember the time we spent together in jail.  

It doesn't really matter. A bit like the bible, we have a family Monopoly set (and a travelling one) it has been cherished and whilst played a lot is in rather good nick.

Our Monopoly set is ancient - we have used all sorts as counters over the years from Dogtanion to Buzz Lightyear. I remember plating years ago and telling a friend to choose a counter from the kids odds and ends - he came back in with a Hobby Horse  

The set we have was my mum's. It was a wartime set meaning it had a small square box for the money, cards tokens and houses/hotels, but the board was separate.

my set is about 30yrs old and an English one but I don't remember a thimble..these are what I have..car, dog, top hat,boat, iron, boot....

I'm sure the wheelbarrow and thimble are from original US sets. We don 't have them either of our two!

Whaaaaat?! No one asked me! I love the iron I'm pleased it was a fan vote though, rather than a corporate decision, I can accept that. I'm always the hat, and we do have a Star Wars version but I can't recall what the tokens are Viva la monopoly

We've been playing monopoly early Saturday evening as a family for the past few weeks, daughter got the millionaire one and son got the star wars one for Christmas and its all they go on about! The Star wars one has jedi and sith as the counters.

Y'know 'they' say that the one you pick is the one that represents your life.

Indeed! On one of the recent afternoons someone suggested playing a board game called "the game of life!" Dreadful! Would rather play Monopoly anytime.
