Isn't there a theory that they were looking for the nearest suitable landing strip after experiencing problems?

yes - I read that soozy - overcome by fire and put onto auto pilot then crashed into the ocean after 7 hours -Pilot turned to go to nearest airstrip common practice apparently but why wait until they are between traffic controllers - coincidence ???? - just weird

Hi Ros  Surely can't be a coincidence - just too weird!

I thought they had established that the tracking devices were turned off before the Co-Pilot sent the 'goodnight' message.  Its definteley a bizarre case.  I just wish that they would find out what has happened to it for the sake of the families.

The thing is if they put it on auto pilot then why are they looking near Australia, they would have to type in the codes into the auto pilot to tell it where to go so why have they ended up near Australia

Yes, seems they took a left turn - south west - that could explain the theory they were heading to the nearest airport for an emergency landing. But then yet another turn -  south towards southern Indian ocean, west of Australia and heading towards the Antarctic.

Its baffling. Must be torture for the poor relatives not even knowing.

That's the odd bit to me, who put in the codes for it to go in the way it did and why, also if they think something went wrong ie fire and then they were trying to land why then go on to fly out to where they are looking now

Malaysian Airlines officials have confirmed that flight MH370 had been carrying highly flammable lithium-ion batteries in its cargo hold.

The news has added further weight to the theory that the crew on the aircraft may have been overcome by an on-flight fire.

The Malaysian airlines flight disappeared from trace on March 9, while flying over the Southern Indian ocean, with 239 passengers and crew on board.

The admission by CEO Ahmad Jauhari  that the ill-fated flight was carrying potentially dangerous cargo, follows a denial four days ago.

Exactly! Its strange... none of the theories quite fit

Thanks for those links with the extra info Erin

One thing I can't get out of my head is, what if the passengers knew for all those hours, they were on a doomed plane and were trapped.

FBI investigator says the plane wasn't on auto pilot has it wouldn't rise and fall or change direction, someone was flying that plane, if there was something wrong (fire etc) there would be a lot of debris, if it was a suicide landing there wouldn't be

Don't know if anyone else has seen the clip of the pilots going through security, I don't know if it's what they have to do but they both look up at a camera, the younger go does it for longer

The CEO of Malaysia Airlines has separately confirmed highly flammable lithium-ion batteries were among the cargo being flown by flight MH370, days after he denied the plane was carrying any dangerous items.

Ahmad Jauhari said the batteries were were classified as non-dangerous goods and had been loaded onto the plane in compliance with aviation guidelines, with the cargo checked several times before take-off.

The batteries, which are used in mobile phones and laptops, have caused a number of fires on commercial planes and - in extreme cases - been blamed for destroying two cargo planes.

Worrying........

Yes it does, but it doesn't explain why the plane flew off course for several hours, an explosion would be quick and the plane would have been found by now.

I may be being a tad thick here, but why are people surprised it is taking so long to find any plane wreckage? It took decades to find the titanic and people knew roughly where it sank as other ships were in the area picking up survivors.. it was a heck of a lot bigger than a plane too... if the plane was heading in a different direction any wreckage may have sank long before they started searching south of its original path..

I feel for the family's but I get very frustrated with all the conspiracy theorist and people putting out full on 'documentary' programmes based around nothing but guesswork and supposition..

I read a suggestion about what happened from a Pilot of 20 yrs... I would have more faith in his theory than I would have in some producer wanting to grab a fast buck on the back of a tragedy by rolling out a documentary within a week or two.. the Pilot stated that the fact the plane went dark was easily explained due to a sudden onboard fire knocking out all electrics and possibly the whole of the crew and passengers eventually, depending on what was burning... he said they practice that possibility and they turn towards the nearest landing strip and put the the plane on auto pilot but if the fire is of the kind that knocks people out within 30secs there is nothing that can be done.. they can't wear oxygen masks if there is a fire and fire hoods give no more than 2 minutes of air and that's about it.

it is very sad all around..

Mount Olympus *Olly*

awww that's a shame. .I do wonder if some country has more info about last position but is not revealing it because it will reveal what technical capabilities that country has, if that makes sense..  I know what I mean anyway

I hope for the sake of the families that they can find it and they can at least know the truth . .I suspect a lot are holding out that their relatives are alive somewhere.. which sadly seems the most unlikely outcome of all

Didn't some other country shoot a plane out of the sky for invading airspace a few yrs back. .I think that was detected by a lot of other countries tho so, if the same had happened, I reckon it would also have been detected by countries using satellites specifically to check for missile launches so unlikely to be the case with this plane..
