The problem with ignoring them is that most calls that come through an automatic switchboard are number witheld. That covers businesses, shops, GP surgeries, hospitals etc. They could be someone you are waiting to phone you back.

I tend to deal with business, shops or hospital on my home phone and usually know who is going to ring and when. The only witheld numbers seem to come through on my mobile phone and they get ignored. I only give my mobile number to friends.

These services usually have a number set aside for outgoing calls to recipients that block witheld number calls (I work for the NHS)

It's a good idea to Google the number that called you if you don't know it. Usually the first result displayed will be a website where other people have reported unsolicited calls from the number. It's often a sales call.

I'm on the Telephone Preference Service list but still get lots of calls. Caller display means I never answer them though Big Grin

I have caller display but I haven't blocked number witheld calls so I have to answer them in case I miss an important call. So if I am understanding your post correctly, this means that I can have them blocked without missing those important calls?

Yep, if you do choose to block witheld numbers, NHS will either use a landline that is set to reveal the outgoing number, or call you from a mobile number. Alternatively, you can request that they only contact you on your mobile number.
