They're a bit annoying however, can be forgiven as it's an operating system. I can't quite understand why Adobe Reader and iTunes need updates on a seemingly weekly basis when 90% of updates seem to leave the software looking and functioning the same.
The problem i have with them is that instead of deleting the one es prior to the new ones they keep adding them to the list. Surely they could do this and help my system speed up a bit. There are reams of updates in my folder.

I'm still using XP, but get a similar number of updates.

The majority of these updates are to deal with security issues which have come to Microsoft's notice, and the updates cover each MS product you have, so if you have Excel as well, you get those updates.

I know that a few weeks ago it was reported that there was a serious matter found where hackers could potentially get access to power stations pcs, and one of these updates was to deal with that.

If you are not getting MS updates automatically, then check the settings. For XP - Control Panel - Security Centre. - Manage Security options. If you do not have a legit copy of Windows, then you may not be able to get updates unless you pay for a legit copy.
