quick hello from me...

Ickle still feeling rotten (she had a relapse after she finished the course of antibiotics...  so she has now got another course of antibiotics - double strength... and they have swabbed her throat ...  for Glandular Fever...  though I am fairly sure it ain't that *Prays*)

Despite all this we have just completed doing her UCAS applications...   the final decisions have been made..     she has definitely decided to do the Chem Eng MEng (4 yr course... and yeah, we have giggled at her getting a "menge")...  first choice - Imperial, second choice - UCL, third choice - Oxford, 4th choice - Manchester, & 5th choice - Bath.

and she has applied for the 2012 entry...  giving herself a gap year!

She really really really wants Imperial ()...   I have seen her like this before..   when she really really wants something...   she's gonna work like a demon this year now..  I know she will!

(so ner ner ne ner ner to the Reeds oiky boys that want to lead her astray!)

ello peeps....

Imperial is in London LB...   so many reasons why that is first choice.

Z...  Oxford is actually third choice... but yeah... I don't think they'd like it.   She has looked into Cambridge.. cos it was on her recommendations sheet..   but when she was looking through the course codes n stuff she saw that she could do her course on one of many campus's...     then she noticed Christchurch...   and I just heard her shriek "nooooo...  Corpus Crispy...   I do not want to be like that bird on University Challenge"

It could be a wasted choice tbh Ditty. If she's really not that keen on going there, she might be better off not putting it on there at all.

Has she had any advice from the school about it? I know the closing date for applications for Oxbridge is a lot earlier than the rest (probably because they're usually first choice....cheeky barstewards ), not that that's a problem as she's obviously not hanging about......

they are ALL about pressuring them into Oxbridge applications at Reeds..   but its not cos its in the students interests...  they want them to go there cos it looks good for them.

Why would it be a problem her applying and theoretically getting an offer from Oxford? Surely she can just decline it (assuming she also gets an offer from Imperial or other favoured choices)?

Theoretically it's not a problem at all...... but in reality I just can't see them even considering her application seriously if they are fourth choice. I could be wrong though, I'm only going by bits and pieces I have heard so far at school, this is the first year I've had anything to do with the UCAS process (except for writing references) so my knowledge is limited at the mo. That's why it's important she gets some guidance about it from school. Once she gives them her application, I'm sure if it is a problem they will tell her.

I'm not sure how the closing date procedure works either. Oxbridge closing date is only weeks away, while the rest are months away. Obviously her application will have to go through three different uni's before getting to Oxford, and that could slow things down.

Obviously it won't be an issue at all if she gets her first two choices.

but how do they know what preference order they are...

when you do the application it rearranges them into alphabetical order?

Ducky.... could you do me a HUGE favour & find out for me...   ideally early next week (I know you have enough to cope with...   I am not expecting you to spend hours finding out... just if there was someone you could quickly ask)?

See, I didn't know that! Told you my knowledge is limited.

I will ask Ditty   (although it may not be necessary now ).

If that's the case, they will just send it to Oxford first.......and the only thing you need to worry about is whether any of her other choices care whether she applied to Oxford. I know there are a couple who get a bit insulted by it for some reason. I will check!

Ooh good luck Ditty with sending Ickle to University
HAHAHA!

I am not sending her Darlo...   she is LEAVING me to go to Uni!

I agree that Uni is not for everyone...    I am fairly sure my son will opt to go down a different path.. though he has recently expressed an interest in accountancy (I was like "where the hell did that come from" )

Thanks everyone for the congratulations

and Ditty I'm pretty sure that the uni's don't know what preference order they are in, but I know that some will not offer a place if Oxford is on the list as they tend to assume it's first choice and therefore offering a place to someone who wants to go to Oxford is a wasted place that could be given to somebody else. At least it was like that when I was applying.

Oooh...  Ickle is about to start a thread on here.....

asking about "Personal Statements"...

She has said she dunno how to start it...      unless she could put something with a Twilight or Harry Potter theme!    (I am fairly sure she was joking when she said it! )

I have to pop out now (need to go to the chemist for MORE strepsils)

Back soon!

we need a comments box...

"NOT FIRST CHOICE...  OXFORD IS 4TH CHOICE...  I LUBS YOUR ESTABLISHMENTS WAY MORE INNIT!"

You can choose up to five choices and there's no preference order Your application will be sent to all chosen universities and colleges at the same time. Each university and college will only see details of their course or courses that you've applied to. They won't see your other choices until you've received your final decision.
thank you Z..   this is how it should be...

but I have a niggly feeling something else may be going on.

for example... if that held true...  you would be able to apply to both Oxford & Cambs...
