Unless anyone can tell me otherwise I think this is the first time McDonalds have
used an ad with a gay theme.

This might sound stupid, but it made me sad he couldn't tell his dad he was gay.
According to the Telegraph, it is - but as the ad shows - it's being shown in France.
I don't know why the Telegraph has reported this as if it was newsworthy though as my opinion is "So what" - I couldn't care two hoots if the young man in the ad was gay or straight, and it's not the first gay ad on television.

Yogi has a point, particularly in view of David Laws having felt unable to tell his family that he was gay.
"Dad, I'm gay"
"Lets go to McDonalds"
*high fives*

That is indeed incredibly sad. When my son came out (age 18) it was a strange and very different thing we went through as a family ...........certainly not a disaster - simply something we'd not faced before. ...........10 years on - it's all good and we love his partner. There are far more difficult and life changing things to get through than admitting that you're gay ................I'm simply sad that he felt he couldn't open up. Although his career is (for the moment) over ......................................I'm quite sure he'll be able to proceed in his personal life and be contented and happy inside. The relief must be incalcuable (sp).
