Corrie Star Arrested Over 'Sexual Assault'

Coronation Street actor Bill Roache has been arrested over a historical allegation of a sexual assault.

The actor, who has played Ken Barlow in the TV soap for decades, was held at his home in Wilmslow, Cheshire, this morning.
Roache, 81, faces an allegation of raping an under-age girl in Lancashire between April and July 1967.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: "An 81-year-old man from Wilmslow in Cheshire has this morning, Wednesday May 1 2013, been arrested by Lancashire Constabulary on suspicion of rape.

"The man will be interviewed at a police station in Lancashire during the course of the day.

"We take all allegations of sexual abuse extremely seriously and would encourage people with any information about sexual abuse, or anyone who has been a victim of sexual abuse, to come forward and report their concerns confident in the knowledge they will be investigated appropriately and with sensitivity."

An ITV spokeswoman said the broadcaster was not in a position to comment, but it is understood Roache will not appear in the long-running soap while investigations continue.

I know not whether he is guilty or not but I've always found him an arrogant git, especially after his comments recently and his misogynistic attitude towards women

I'm still finding it hard to believe that we're not seeing more arrests of people like judges, police chiefs and politicians - it all seems to be directed towards celebs or anyone who is dead

It may be that victims of celebrities have felt encouraged to come forward, because it started off with a celeb (Savile). It could be that we are hearing more about celebs because that's what the papers are interested in (sells more papers), but I'm sure I heard that victims of totally unconnected abuse were inundating helpline phone lines, so we live in hope. The North Wales children's homes investigation appears to be looking fruitful, but I don't know how many of those being investigated are in positions of power. The Lib Dems have been involved in a couple of cases.

I was thinking that Cosi...Monica Lewinsky dress? I am not for one minute suggesting his innocence, but I do wonder what they have to charge him after so long ago. I hope if they have the proof and he is guilty he gets what he deserves, 81 or 21

It's got to be something pretty concrete and beyond doubt, Damesy, so yeah, I'd guess it would have to be along those lines.

And for the 'evidence' to have been kept for so many years..... wow!

There can't be any forensic evidence from 1967 as DNA tests didn't exist. There must  therefore be witness statements. One wonders whether the other Corrie stars who are currently being investigated are turning state evidence.

But what if the victim kept an item of clothing and had it tested more recently?

And chance of that being possible (for instance)?

Monica Lewinsky's dress just sprang to mind, but to charge him, they must have something that is convincing them to take the case forward and I would think more than hearsay after all these years.

If such a thing existed Cosi, it would indeed prove that there had been some 'activity'.

Doesn't prove anything untoward though.

I don't really know what outcome to hope for here ... I suppose if loads more women come forward after today's news it would build a case against him, if none do, perhaps it won't.

Don't know that there are any winners here

I agree Rexi....

All these ppl who have been arrested did the alleged misdemeanours in the '60s and '70s. Then what? Did they all start going straight? I want to see justice done, but I have questions.

Indeed.

And, who's going to remember the minute details of something that happened over 40 years ago..?  I suppose if you're the victim you'd recall every rotten second of it - but I don't fancy their chances if cross questioned by the defence.  Just got to hope that the evidence is water tight and true.

I can't imagine a victim back then would keep it or be advised to do so back then Cos. Personally, I would have wanted my clothing burnt.

I agree.  But people do strange things in certain situations.

You're probably correct though, Xochi; it's more plausible that there's others and corroborating evidence

Well, at least as he's been charged there will be a trial and some resolution one way or the other.

Bog forgive, but we find ourselves looking for hurried filler material. Tonight for example, some cast members were doing sudoku, spot the difference, and suggesting early nights with people one wouldn't entertain whilst dogs remain on the street.

But Le Vell wasn't around in 1967. He wasn't born until 1964.

For sure Sooz. But there may have been chat about these subjects later. And anyway, its just a theory about how he could be charged now. The only other possibility is that the police investigation at the time of the complaint was faulty.

Oh. I think I just shot my own original theory down.

Xochi

Was it investigated at the time? I don't know but if it was perhaps the investigation wasn't terribly thorough. Maybe the alleged victim has come forward again due to recent events. It would appear that some 'celebs' weren't pursued as vigorously as they might have been back in the day ...................attitudes have changed somewhat. Perhaps there were witnesses - who knows?

It must have been investigated at the time. That's why I suggested the original complaint is being re-investigated because it was faulty. Horrendous to think that a victim might have had to accuse someone that long ago and then decide to try again.
