It's delicous Soozy... bready cake type thing, with cinnamony type spices and fruit... boiled in a cloth (cloot) and left to dry... clootie dumpling 'skin' is my favourite part.   We used to go to my great gran's every weekend and she's always have a dumpling drying out on a plate by the coal fire when we got there - it usually had sixpences in it too.

It is gorgeous Soozy, It's a desert, sort of like a fruit laden steamed pudding.

Cheers Sounds something like Spotted Dick ...............i'm not keen on puddingy puddings though.

My Mum used to make a Date pudding like this, except I used to like it before it dried, sprinkled with sugar or with custard.....delicious.

Which is what us softy suvverners call it.

Sounds exactly the same as the fruit pudding my nan used to make.

I never ate it as a pudding.. more like a slice of cake.   They look awful though..

However it's never usually served like that. It's usually all sliced up before it reaches the table. We usually had it at Christmas and or new year served with custard or Rum Butter Sauce or cream.

My mum used to make clootie dumplings years ago,especially on birthdays,I  used to love a slice pan fried in butter at breakfast.Not keen on it now,I've lost my sweet tooth.

I always remember my aunt tried to steam one in the twin tub washing machine!

Ohh, clooty dumpling. I used to eat it fried for breakfast. I know that most people have it as a desert, but in my house it was for breakfast.

Its delicious soozy, its like a dark rich fruit cake.

We sometimes had it with cooked brekkie.  I'd say that was weird, but then BUTCHERs used to sell commericially produced ones in slices cut from a long loaf shaped piece, so maybe it does go with bacon and sausage.    We used to have fried pancake with a fry sometimes too
