According to wikipedia the heir apparent is Jonathan Nicholas William Herbert, Viscount Clive, born 1979

His grandmother is from Welshpool, so maybe he is a relative and somewhere in the line of succession, or maybe just related to staff!

I think that the gossip is probably tosh....but maybe, just maybe, Mario's secret is that he's posher than Ben and that he's a Herbert not a Mugan...why let the truth get in the way of a good rumour anyway

It may not be as satisfying an answer (at least not for us viewers), but I think it's become increasingly clear over the last few days that Mario's "secret" is simply the location of the TOT. Remember: he told the others the TOT existed, but not what/where it is. Also, he doesn't know that other HMs already know where it is: Corin's kept mum, and Shabby only told Caoimhe.

Today (in spite of agreeing not to last night with Shabby, Caoimhe and JJ) Dave has challenged Mario directly. He just couldn't resist.
He said something like:
"We all know you are part of the production tem Mario....blah...blah....if you want the door open they will do it for you...blah."

Mario denied this in a deadpan (and rather unamused) voice.

It would be so funny if he was part of the production team it would be a great twist
