Ahhh...Mrs T. She was my hero back in the days when we needed her. Anyone around then will remember that the country was going down the drain with the Labour left around....we very nearly didn't have a country to speak of until she came along with her hatchet style and cut cancer out of the country like a good surgeon.

Twas a shame that she lost it a bit in later years, and she rightfully went when she did....bit like Churchill really..he won the war and was the best person for the job at the time and as soon as he'd done that, the country dumped him in a landslide against him.

I like that...The best person for the job, whatever the job to be done, then change them when the job requirements change. It's the only way to go Smiler

Indeed they do.

The old adage is true, never discuss religion or politics - because you will never get to any agreement. People become passionate about their views, on both sides, and before long no-one can "play nicely" anymore. I won't change my views or opinions on Margaret Thatcher any more than those that hate her will. I will agree that I didn't agree with everything she did, any more than I agree with what every other leader did when they were in power.

That is all Smiler

You are not on your own, I just can not be arsed. Nod

Maggie was one of the best Prime Ministers of our time. I dread to think what a complete and utter mess this country would have been in if she had not come to power.
Taking on the union leaders who had destroyed our manufacturing base and getting them back to doing what they were created for.
Long live Maggie.

You are not alone Liverpool Lass, there are probably very many who just do not shout as loud Hug and that hug is for all the brave souls on here who have stuck up for Maggie against the overwhelming tide of hatred (and all while I was tucked up in bed Big Grin)

And what is really so funny (in a warped way) is that when they are all so busy hating on Maggie the people they voted in have completely mucked up running the country and we are in a tragic state compared with when they got into power on the slogan "Things Can Only Get Better"

I had a great evening the other day chatting to a young Social work student who was wittering on about Maggie and what she had done to the poor people of this country.
When asked about how bad things were before, 3 day working week, power cuts etc she had know idea. She stated that her tutor never talked about anything before 1980.
That just summed it up for me, selective teaching, another problem that seems to have come to the fore recently.

Maggie had one very fatal flaw in her philosophy - She couldn't distinguish the difference between wealth creation and wealth aquisition. That is why this country lost the majority of it's wealth creation industry and replaced it with wealth aquisistion IE Banking, Insurance, service industries all dependent on taking in one another's washing. It was an accident waiting to happen since the eighties.

People forget that the current situation with MP's expenses rest firmly at her door. She introduced the second home allowance to compensate for the lack of a salary increase. MP's were encouraged to treat this allowance as part of their salary and therefore it is not suprising that they did - hence the outrageous claims.

Ah! Before 1980.
One nation Toryism/Heritage Labour.
A cracking social structure.
Manufacturing our own stuff using our own fuel.
Try telling anyone in this area that Thatcher was good for them, because she smashed the lot.

Having said that I find it incredibly mean spirited to talk of dancing on her grave and suchlike. There is no point castigating her and then celebrating two successive NEW Fecking Labour leaders who carried on with her policies and did little to ameliorate the defects of Capitalism.

(Wish we all had a fiver for everytime I have posted the above)
Garage Joe
I was once arrested though not charged with pelting her with eggs Ninja

She was known in Brum as Tatcher the hospital place snatcher (in addition to the milk snatcher) cos there was a time when she refused to intervene in a lack of funding to the Children's Hospital and intensive care beds had to close as they couldn't afford the nurses to fund them and babies died as a result. Private business clubbed together to pay for nurses to keep the beds open.

And if it was her fault then why was she and her husband not doing the same? Helping themselves to public funds, nor Harold Wilson or any other leader before Tony Blair?

No matter how much I despise Tony Blair and all he stood for (particularly leading us into the war with Iraq as the stooge of George Bush), I would never state that I would rejoice when he died as it is a wicked thing to say.

He and his awful wife merely lined their pockets at our expense and then he got out when he knew the country was going down the pan. The writing was already on the wall.
HyacinthB
Since this thread is about Margaret Thatcher and people have been blaming her for all the ills of the modern world, she'll probably get blamed for swine flu any minute, I would just like to remind people of Gorbachev Reagan and Thatcher who brought an end to communism in Russia and lead directly to an end to the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

How do you know that she wasn't - the expenses scandal only deals with claims over the past four/five years. We do not know what was going on before that.

I worked for a company once where instead of a pay rise it was agreed that I could fill my car with fuel once a week. If you had come accross that situation a few years later and not understood the agreement it would have looked as though I was stealing company fuel. That is what happened to the MP's - they were told they could claim upto ÂĢ23K and treat it as salary - thats what most have done !!!

This seems like a good time to air the old question,

Q. "What's the difference between Capitalism and Communism?"

A. "In Capitalism, man exploits man, but in Communism it's the other way around!"

So really with your way of thinking there was no point in ending the Cold War, reuniting Germany and bringing down the Berlin Wall then. Just same old same old according to you then?
