A lazy insult toward those who don't think life was once an Enid Blyton book...often confused with health and safety by the sort of people who are obsessed with wheely bins Thumbs Up

It's a term often used by closet or unconscious racists who regret that they can't speak their mind openly in polite society anymore, in my experience anyway.

Or people who decide on everyone else behalf what we can and cant say, because in their tiny little white middle class worlds think they are helping us all live as one, but in reality are causing more problems. Nod

Hey Leccy,I am like you in that I do actually have many 'right on' beliefs but BB has gone pussy after stupid trumped up allegations in the past and Marcus was bob on, wasn't he? I love him for his stance!

True 'political correctness' is about the relationship between words and thoughts. We not only put our thoughts into words, we also think in certain ways over time because of the words we use. It's the second of those that gives political correctness its power and makes it quite desirable if used properly.

For instance, describing someone as 'disabled' is making an implicit and potentially wide-reaching distinction between 'normal' people and 'disabled' people. Their particular disability might simply be that they can't walk very far.

I still don't get it. Ok, I'm thick, but isn't it just as bad to give concessions to a particular ethnic group just BECAUSE they are in that group?

Perhaps it's just because I am an old hippy and want us all to live together in peace and harmony, but there are always going to be people that you just can't connect with, no matter if they're "black or white".

Oh yet again we agree. I can hear the shell suits rattling a mile off.

Another point I would make is that the get out clause people us of 'it's only words' is that you have to be thinking those dodgy thoughts to even have the words in your head in the fist place.

TBH I'm shocked I'm even saying it coz 99 times out of 100 I'd probably say the opposite to now.

Exactly, holding one's own beliefs doesn't mean you can't smell bullshit. And this was bullshit Nod

F'sure.

Actually, let me qualify that. Giving concessions to ethnic minority groups might be justifiable to offset systematic disadvantage. Giving advantages to individuals simply for being part of an ethnic minority group is almost certainly not justifiable.

See, this the problem I have. We are expected to differ to the elderly and disabled and I really don't have a problem with that. But, suppose you hold the door open to a shop to allow an elderly or disabled person to pass and they don't even bother to acknowledge the small effort and time that you gave? Are you not allowed to think that s/he is a prat?

I've worked with disabled people most of my life, Some I liked, some I didn't. Some I became very close to because they didn't allow their disability to define themselves. They remained a person first, with a disability far down the line.

I suppose I try to relate the same concept to people from other cultures. For me, they are first and foremost a person with personality traits and characteristics that I like.
FM
Of course you can think they are a prat Suzi, you can even tell them.

But what you should say is "Oh you are such a prat" and NOT "oh you are such a sp*z prat" (I know you wouldn't, I'm just explaining)

That's the difference...

...and I'm not sure what you meant here

You mean like giving up seats on the bus or summat?

To you, maybe. However, study after study over time shows that a CV with an ethnic name on it is significantly less likely to go further than the same CV with an indigenous British name on it. Strange, that.

Yeah, kind of with the seats and stuff - and I don't have a problem with that, it's common courtesy and all. Something that I was taught at an early age and have tried to teach my boys. I have always had a great respect for the elderly - they have been there, done that and all that.

I think it's more to do with the whole "culture" of today. We should "respect" MJ, we should "respect" Jordan, we should "respect" this and that, but what about respecting others' beliefs and cultures if they differ from our own? I do, most of the time, but I find it hard to "respect" someone who is determined to disrespect what I believe in, what I hold dear because it is different to what they hold dear?

I feel as though by repressing my beliefs in order to "respect" others beliefs is just as bad as dismissing them in the first place.

We are all different. Even the white majority. I don't believe in a higher being, others do. Which of us is right?
