I think The grandad is actually Alice's father, I don't think Ruth's husband fathered Alice.
Maybe the grandad raped Ruth,
I could be 100% wrong ,wouldn't be the first time.

I've been thinking that the Olive's dad might be the grandad, thus making her Ruth's halfsister.
Olive said to Amy that she had had a secret friend and I think Alice was the friend. Perhaps the girls played together when Grandad and Olive's mum were meeting up.

I thought the grandfather was mebbe having an affair with Olive's mother and that Olive was supposed to be looking after Alice but she got away and because Olive was deaf, she couldn't hear where she'd gone.  I also think it might have tied up nicely with Amy in the 80s when last night she almost fell in the lake but Olive saved her - something she couldn't do with Alice  Is that why she's such a recluse?

I also think asko is ask Olive Runcie

Well done stonksy

I actually enjoyed it and thought tonight tied up all ends rather than being an anti climax.
Me too shar..I'm glad it was ended on an English type ending unlike that American stuff where every end has to be tied up and they all live happily ever after....

I haven't been in this thread too much, but it occured to me from a fairly early time that her grandad was involved, but it would have been so much better if he had actually had a hand in her death, rather than this fizzling out excuse of an arrangement.
But he did have a hand in her death and kept it a secret, which was bad form....

But so did Olive. She dared her to go upstairs. If she hadn't, nothing would have happened. I'm not excusing the grandfather (seeing that I thought he'd somehow killed her for one reason or another), but this ended in a damp squip, again. ITV are great for starting dramas, but carp at resolving them.
