Father with 'post-natal depression' killed daughter

A father who believed he was suffering from male post-natal depression searched the internet for information on how to kill a baby before suffocating his six-month-old daughter, a jury heard.

Mark Bruton-Young, 36, an architect, allegedly murdered his daughter, Harriet, after he resented the intrusion of the “unplanned” baby into his married life, Bristol Crown Court heard.

The jury was told he used the search engine Google to research methods of killing his daughter after he failed to bond with her, and blamed her for his marriage problems.

Bruton-Young spent months on a work computer searching for ways to kill, including punching babies in the stomach, cot death, choking and poisoning, before deciding on suffocation, the jury heard.

Paul Dunkels, prosecuting, said: “It is the prosecution's case that having searched the internet for this information, being overwhelmed with being a father and resenting his child, he killed his daughter Harriet by suffocating her.”

Bruton-Young denies murder between June 26 and June 27 2009.

The court heard Harriet was an unplanned, unwanted child when she was born to her father and her mother, Clare, also an architect, of Kingsway, Glos., in December 2008.

Bruton-Young, an architect at RPS, a Bristol firm, had problems coping with the birth almost immediately.

Colleagues described him as ''depressed'' and claimed he spent all his time on his computer.

Mr Dunkels said: “It was not a planned pregnancy and from the outset her father had difficulty in coming to terms with fatherhood and was depressed by it.

“He resented the intrusion of Harriet into his married life. Using a computer at work to search for information, it provided a window into his thoughts and his intentions.

“Initially, he searched for information on bonding with your baby, depression and coping with fatherhood.”

But in early February 2009 Bruton-Young used a work computer to look at “how to get an unwanted baby adopted".

He searched for information on “how a child might be harmed or die and a baby being suffocated, and what signs might be detected if a baby was suffocated.''

Forensic searches on the hard-drives of three work computers found he made hundreds of searches between January and June 2009.

In January he Googled 'coming to terms with fatherhood'.

But by February these had developed into post natal depression searches and even "I thought I wanted kids but now I don't know", the court heard.

Over the next few months his searches explored death by anti-freeze poisoning, lead poisoning and the effects of punching a child in the stomach. He searched 'dies of suffocation' on June 8, 2009.

Mr Dunkels said: “The defendant's searches begin to concentrate on suffocation and the signs that might be left behind if a baby was suffocated.” The court head Bruton-Young had received counselling and was seeing a health visitor in the six months following Harriet's birth

I know its wrong to say, but he has one of those faces that just looks as if he is putting the feel sorry for me look on.

Why is she still with him?

God knows.

I hope someone sensible can answer this, my senses seem to have gone out the window after reading this.

Was the baby unwanted by both of them? I'm not sure if the cited article is inferring that. Either way, it is a sorry state of affairs. Poor child.

It's an unholy precedent if this gets through the law statutes. Baby P's step-father could have used this prospective judgement in his favour, theoretically.

I know Stonks. I don't know enough about this case, but I do know that depression can alter mental states for both men and women. It's just the use of PND that is blurring the issue here, and the fact that it seems so calculated.

Yes it does seem very calculated, everyone knows its virtually impossible to get away with murder these days so what better way than to create your own defence with a cyber paper trail like he has....

No sentence yet, he's the only one on trial when it possibly should be both of them.

Following a personal tragedy in 2009 we reassessed our priorities and decided that life was too short to be making money for someone else. The business was initially set up by Clare to offer bookkeeping and credit management with Mark joining shortly afterwards.

We are passionate about cars, motorsports and anything with an engine. We enjoy working on Clare's JDM Subaru and are also restoring a Peugeot 205 GTi in the little spare time that we have. As active members of www.uklegacy.com (Subaru Legacy owners club) we enjoy organising and attending events all around the country, usually including camping and socialising(!)

Mark is passionate about remote control cars, having been involved in building and racing them since his formative years, while Clare's passions are cooking and making beaded jewellery for friends and family.

Ok, lets see if the judicial system gets the sentencing right with this one.

Yep, considering it took months and months of internet research (that showed a clear decline from finding it hard to bond with a baby to how to seriously harm a baby).

How the woman could stay in the house with a man who clearly had issues with the baby is beyond me. She could have kicked his arse out or taken the child and got the hell out. I can't believe that she didn't hear the massive alarm bells ringing when he seemed to do everything he could to not go near the baby. The fact she has stayed with him and is backing him makes me think that both of them are not fit to be trusted parents should she ever be stupid enough to get pregnant by him again.

It says he had counselling and was seeing a health visitor. I wouldn't imagine he would have declared his real feelings when speaking to them but it does make me wonder why the baby was allowed to remain living in the home, especially because of cases like baby P.

Post natal depression ffs. I don't know what lawyer advised him to go for that plea but they should be sentenced as well for trying to use that as a viable excuse. It seems clear (to me) that it was a pre-meditated act that was backed up by months of internet research. Murderer.

He is out on bail!!

A few months after Harriet was born in December 2008, Bruton-Young used an office computer to look up getting an unwanted baby adopted, the court heard.

He later gathered information on how a child might be harmed or die, as well as what physical signs might be detected if a baby was suffocated.

Police searches on the hard drives of work computers found that Bruton-Young made hundreds of searches between January 2009 and June.

He Googled the terms ‘coming to terms with fatherhood’ and ‘I thought I wanted kids but now I don’t know’. Over the next few months his searches explored death by anti-freeze poisoning, lead poisoning and the effects of punching a child in the stomach.

He also looked at the effects on a baby ingesting faeces before he searched ‘dies of suffocation’ on June 8, 2009.

Prosecutor Paul Dunkels said: ‘The defendant’s searches begin to concentrate on suffocation and the signs that might be left behind if a baby was suffocated.’

Bruton-Young, who worked at Bristol firm RPS, is also said to have carried out online research on how to pass Harriet’s death off as cot death – or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Search terms used only four days before Harriet was found dead included ‘signs of deliberate suffocation’, ‘child suffocated by plastic bag’, ‘father convicted of suffocation’ and ‘how quickly can a baby suffocate?’, the jury heard.

Mr Dunkels said: ‘Chillingly, one of the last searches he made was “signs of a body being moved after suffocation”.

‘This reveals the full extent of his plan. He was later to claim that when he found Harriet he had found her lying on her front. The prosecution say that having smothered Harriet he set this scene of her facing downwards to show his wife.’

Yesterday Bruton-Young sobbed as a recording of his 999 call in the early hours of June 27 was played to the court.

His wife could be heard screaming in the background as Bruton-Young told the ambulance operator Harriet was ‘cold’ and ‘white’.

Two inconclusive post-mortem examinations had been carried out on Harriet, and that Professor Peter Fleming, from Bristol Children’s Hospital had said the baby was at a ‘very low risk of SIDS’, while ‘evidence of deliberate suffocation is very hard to identify’.

Mr Dunkels said: ‘The defendant had succeeded in suffocating his daughter and leaving no detectable signs of what he had done. However, we say his computer searches reveal what his true ideas were.’

The prosecution also alleged Bruton-Young tried to poison Harriet with anti-freeze in the days leading up to her death after he called NHS Direct asking about the effects of the chemical on the body.

Mr Dunkels told the court: ‘The prosecution say that his calls were made because of his continued concern about the post mortem following Harriet’s death. This concerned possible anti-freeze in her body, in an earlier attempt to harm her.’

NHS Direct contacted a social worker about Bruton-Young’s calls who was told he had actually been calling about a friend’s child.

But just days later he was arrested on suspicion of poisoning Harriet. Police searched his house and found notes which said: ‘I want her out of the equation.’

He claimed they were notes dealing with his post-natal depression, that he took to his counsellor.

Bruton-Young, of Kingsway, Gloucestershire, denies murdering his child at the end of June 2009 when she was six months old.

Just read some of the other stuff in Erin's post that he'd researched (which I won't quote). I hope that cowardly bastard burns in hell and that pathetic excuse of a 'mother' who's standing by him, despite plotting to kill her flesh and blood by any means necessary, never has the chance to have children again.
