For every day I use Oil of Olay tinted moisturiser. For evenings or if I'm going somewhere I use Clarins base stuff (flash balm) and Cliniques Even Better foundation.

 That made me splutter my Irn Bru!

I looked up the Cliniques foundation on boots and it has good reviews, i might have to go test that one out

Jen it really is fabulous. A few years ago I had really bad problem skin and it was absolutely brilliant. My skin is better now (probably the best it's ever been) but I still use the range as it is so good. Very light, only need a small amount but it covers well and evenly - brilliant stuff.

See I've always not worn it unless I'm going out on the town etc. but since i hit 30 I'm feeling a little 'meh' about my appearance and have been wearing a little foundation and eyeliner most day for a while, so now I'm about to go out with friends who see me most days the extra eyeshadow and lippy might not make the same transformation as it used to

Do people generally use a base/primer? or is it only reserved for special occasions? I suppose i need a trip to boots to have a few things tried on.

Go with what you feel comfortable with and sod the others! 

I've always worn make up - feel undressed without it - never a lot but can't go out without foundation and mascara. I've only very, very recently started to wear lipstick - I've never liked it and always felt too 'made up' and grown up with it on. I suppose now I'm 56 I am actually grown up.

Jen, I generally don't use primer, but I've heard the Benefit pore reducing one is supposed to be good. I find it hard to get foundations that match my skin tone, so up until recently Ive used Elizabeth Arden (good but pricey!). But recently tried Rimmel Match Perfection and I really like it! Its a lighter coverage than my other one, but still good, so I tend to use it more for everyday and save the expensive one Rimmel wake me up foundation is also supposed to be good too - more of a glowy one than a matte one

I've heard amazing things about Chanel vitalumiere Aqua and really want to try it but it's very expensive!

What about perfume.

I always put my perfume on once showered and dressed.

Chanel No 5 is my safety blanket ....always have one on the go .....it's part of me. And ....I usually have another one or two 'experimental' ones. Currently 'Euphoria' Calvin Klein and Estee Lauder 'Beyond Paradise'.

I do love perfumes .......it's one 'luxury' I'd really, really miss if I was forced to cut down. I could quite happily go cheap on cosmetics but I'd have to be pushed to compromise on perfume.

Saz i'm quite pale (irish skin!) so i really have to be careful not to look cakey so i have in the past used sheer cover mineral powder + their concealers which i found matched my tone really well and wasn't too heavy.

I've just found a few people saying good things about MUA (superdrug stock it) and it's sooooo cheap AND they don't test on animals... I've just ordered a few bits from there which i'm looking forward to trying out

I try foundation now and then as everyone seems to use it and I just feel like I have slapped a load of cement on my face even if tis a moisturising one. . feels terrible. . looks terrible as it takes the contours from your face and even more so when it says natural glow yet ends up that dreadful matt look  like they all seem to do..

don't any of you feel like your face is sealed off and no air can get to it when you slap that stuff on it? and I cannot understand the slapping on of layer after layer of different stuff too.. I used to LUT BB  when they were doing their make up I'd sit in utter credulity  at why they were shoving so much shit on their faces.  sorry ladies I just never got it.. mascara and lippy was about it for me with a slight blush occasionally and some inner eye kohl but am too old for even that now...

As for Primer, I'm new to it too and from what i can gather it hides pores and even out oily patches.

I never feel sealed off as i tend not to wear thick foundations so i dont feel like im wearing any. The mineral powders i mentioned up there are really light and silky

I have some tinted different moisturiser/foundation type stuff and they are really light yet it feels like I am caked adn I hardly use any of it. . I only play about now and then, tis not like I am going out anywhere ever, but with age comes different tones on the skin and wanted to try to even it out. . think I prefer the age spots to the caked up feeling and one dimensional face look

You can get tinted primer's too, Jen.

I use one (non tinted) and sometimes don't bother with foundation - it just leaves the skin nice and soft/smooth...it would be good for you pre-prowder.

The Benefit one that Saz mentioned is good, as is their Lemon Aid for any shadows (under the eyes etc).

If you park yourself in front of the rep on the Benefit counter she'll give you a free demo/make over at no cost.  In fact, ALL the cosmetic sales reps should be biting your hand off to show you their stuff.

Yeah I had a consultation some years ago at the Clinique counter. I'd always felt really intimidated before that but my skin was really awful at the time and I was desperate. The lady was lovely and it was really helpful.

That's what they're there for - but I know what you mean.  It can be soul destroying to see some of them lurking behind the counter.

What really annoys me, Soozy, is that some sales assistants don't even offer to test new products on you.  I dunno, but Selfridges is always banged out with girls trying new stuff - for free - applied by the sales staff.  Most of them walk out with a full makeover and look great.  Not being arsey but out in Spain, it's almost impossible to buy a mascara (for instance) without them wanting to apply their latest products on you.

I'd love to see some of these make up assistants in the shops, first thing in the morning  

Best one I ever saw was in Allders in Croydon.  It was like an orange beacon with a death stare.  She freaked me out every time!

Customer: Do you have anything for open, enlarged pores?

Assistant:  Hmmmmmmm I think we may have some flesh coloured darning wool somewhere
