As a direct result of Thatcher's policies I stopped voting Conservtive back in the 80s and haven't voted for them since. I believe that her view that quality of life should be measured in terms of wealth, and that view still is pervasive in government, is responsible more than any other factor in the slow disintegration of society in the UK. Although everyone needs to have a reasonable level of standard of living, I don't think the pursuit of money in itself can bring any happiness, if anything it can bring unhappiness,

In the bible the saying "The love of money is the root of all evil" (1 Timothy 6.10) puts it rather well. Note that this saying is often misquoted as "Money is the root of all evil". If you translate it from the original Greek, the New American Standard Bible has it as "For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil,"

She had it sussed with the coal scenario
How very true! Before Thatcher we had a coal industry allied with a thriving chemical industry. We could make anything from coal, including petrol. The first specialist fuel from coal plants were designed primarily to power the new breed of fighter planes, spitfires and hurricanes for just one example. At least now, thanks to Thatcher and her pals, we can rely on our good friends the Russians for our future fuel needs.
Thatcher did have vision, the sort of vision one observed on the face of that tramp who was dragged out of a McDonalds last time one was in that London. The vacant baffled look as he slides along in his own piss.
