Has little Atlas been lifting weights, then?

ION, I took Kenji for his annual appointment today, and complained bitterly about all of his little behavior changes in the last year: used to love children, now is aggressive with them, wakes me up by yelling in my face at 5am, etc., etc. The vet is putting him on Prozac!

She thinks he has an "anxiety disorder", and assures me that this will relax him w/out sedating him, and I'll have my old fun-loving Kenji back. (Note: she is of course ruling out any  physical causes for these complaints before we actually start the Prozac.)

I know, Jonesy....but if it works, it's a relatively inexpensive solution at $15/month. (cheaper than my husband's prescriptions, let me tell you. )

How do you get get the cat to take the meds? In the food i presume? Reckon the hubby takes his normally?

SO far, normally....but if he ever gives me trouble, I'll try these little treat-balls they gave me. You stick a pill in it, and the cat thinks it's a treat, and gobbles it right up.

Years ago I had a big dog that needed daily meds, and I'd wrap it up in a bit of cream cheese. Very popular with the pill-taking set.

I see where you are coming from with the dogs, but the cats seem to be 100% more intelligent than the canine community. I would have thought pills crunched up with a bit of fish would work? Do you have pet insurance for your moggies?

FM

Teehee. I'm not sure my husband would agree re the whole dogs vs. cats intelligence. Of course, he's not a big fan of either, but he loves to tease me about how "intelligent" Kenji is supposed to be...while exhibiting other tendencies every day.

I think the food thing would work for him, though: he gulps his food so fast he won't even notice!

And yes, Kenji is insured...don't know if it's gonna cover the drug habit though.

Regular reps for muscle gain...plucking all zeus' wiskers  thats done it! poor zeus!

zazz

Awwww....poor zeus!

Gypsie, I could never find anything (or I found too much...like consulting Dr. Google if you are a hypochondriac. ) That's why I took him into the vet--she's known him since he was a kitten, and I trust her judgment. If there were a downside, I wouldn't do it, and if it doesn't seem to make a difference, we'll stop the Prozac.  And no, no other kitties (although I'd love one...my husband has a 1-cat limit. )

We have quite a big zoo in the town I live...    the brown bear they had (I think she's dead now.... she was knocking on a bit when I last went to the zoo - I am not big on zoo's)..   anyway.. the brown bear was on Prozac!     So I have heard of animals being given it before.

The only downside I can think of is that...     having been on prozac once myself...   there is a (much disputed by the medics) side effect - suicidal tendancies & depression!

They can't prove it though... cos people on prozac are on prozac cos they are depressed...   so how do you prove that the prozac made them worse.      I went a bit bonkers on them... though I couldn't see it myself..   and I cannot be sure it was the prozac.    I was put on the prozac cos I was suffering from anxiety... which ended up being because of Norplant contraceptive rods I had in my arm.   Once i had the rods out, & binned the prozac I was right as rain again.

In your case though Lori...  it should be quite easy to tell..   cos your cat isn't depressed..   just a bit..  ermmm..  feisty!      If he starts looking sad... I'd stop giving him the prozac

Hmmmm........ that's interesting! Maybe it's the mix of Prozac and contraceptive?

My sis has been on prozac for years, and a year ago she changed her contraceptive, and started using the pill. Within a couple of days she was dangerously suicidal! I mean seriously scarily mental! She stopped taking the pill and then she was right as rain again.
