Aww Mary,I too was a nail biter from childhood 'till the age of about 16.I thought to myself..right leaving school,going for interviews etc time to beat this habit,I did with willpower,once you see a little bit of white growing you are encouraged.
During illmess a few times I reverted, but then beat it again.Tonight I've just cut back my nails they were too long, nearly half an inch.I garden and they became dirt collectors.
I did for the shortest time when someone told me HOW germy it is but I missed the feeling too much
