Yeah Ika, everywhere has its own speech patterns especially working class folk...you just get used to your own/people around you and tune it out. You only really notice when it differs from your own.

When we used to go to Scotland it took my husband ages to understand what my sisters were saying, and if they got excited about anything they would talk so fast he was completely lost
I suppose it's true if you are used to it you don't notice it as much.Now Glaswegian,there are some tuly awful repetative words used.Not by me you understand unless I get a bit pished of an evening,then the venacular escapes.

I think it spread it further...but like has always been used a lot in the north.It's no different to Prince Charles with his umming and ahhing...lots of really posh (not just RP, I mean sloaney types) "erm" a lot too.

Another of my Irish friends uses 'pet' quite alot, and i have to admit, when I go over and come home I find myself saying "Tanks a million" OR "tanks a mill" alot!!!
