I think perhaps the hero bit may come in more with the way that he has dealt with his injuries.
I don't know a lot about the man - but it must be a struggle to get by at times with activities of daily living, That could be argued as being heroic - in which case we have loads of unsung heroes.

For my part, I would not want to see Steve win beause of his injuries, BUT if he were to win because he was the best HM then that would be fine by me.

Steve is an inspiration having overcome his injuries ,but he is not entertaining in the slightest,he brings nothing to the show .Most HL shows you see Steve standing in the garden as if he is waitnig on a bus.The HMS will never nom him ,not even for the noise he makes with his snoring,they don't want to come across as being mean to the "Hero".

A brave ex-soldier wins the last ever BB - clearly that's what they are aiming for.

I admire Steve greatly but as a housemate not so much - he does not hold my interest in what is supposed to be an entertainment show.

They wanted BB to go out with a bang.

Hi Leccy It is the forum who keeps saying war hero I doubt very much Steve see's himself as that,in fact I would say the opposite when the other HMS give him any kind of praise he shrugs it off,he copes well and has a good attitude to what has happened to him and all at a very young age if it were my son I would be so proud of him, I hope he enjoys his time in the house he deserves it

he does have a brilliant attitude Marg, especially in regards to the whole BB experience, none of the daft angst we get from the younger ones...who only care about air time or how "cool" they look.

And from that perspective to me it would not be the end of the world if he was the last person standing so to speak.
I get the feeling that he is pretty matter of fact about the whole thing and if he were to be evicted tomorrow he would just shrug and carry on.
Steve has humility which is why I wouldn't be bothered if he won. He may be dull BUT why should the gobbiest person win?

Not sure the gobbiest person should win Isadora but it should be someone who has given us a bit of entertainment over the 13 weeks.

Having said that, it could be that Steve has been the victim of poor editing because he does come out with some good one liners when you do get to see some footage of him.

Apologies if this has already been covered. Steve is of course free to keep whatever he might win. There IS a limit on savings before it affects certain benefits but there is a way around this. I've used it a few times when clients on benefits have had cases settled and come into a large amount of damages/compensation. It's a bit of a "cheat" to some I guess but it ring fences the money so benefits are unaffected. What you do is set up a trust so that the person has no immediate control over the money and has to ask the chosen trustees for "handouts". A bit pathetic I know but generally you'd pick a parent/sibling/close friend so any request is largely academic. The only proviso is that you can't draw a regular sum from the trust fund but you could draw sporadic sums to cover a holiday for example, or a new pc or wheelchair or whatever you need.

as for the Hm';s giving him some money if they win it was to buy him a leg that would work better for him and not available on the NHS, ,  Ben was against this cos I believe he thinks the NHS should supply the best equipment ..regardless of the fact they dont; have the funds to do so..

Steve has been highlighting the raw deals amputees get on the NHS and the moeny needed to buy proper equipment and offer proper support.. . that is why he went on there..  and ont he Live feed he has talked about this a lot..

I hate the patronising way the HM's talk about him tho and am sure if he heard half of it he'd hate it too..

ben's attitude in believing  the NHS  should supply really irks me, because  they either won't/can't,  or steve will shoved on a waiting list for decades, it's the easy way out response, you look principled and not mean, the same way as people won't give to the lifeboats because ' the govt. ought to provide it' well they don't, so what do we do wait for  people to drown and sit back on principled bums and tut a bit?

 

On the flip side relying on charities means people who aren't "in the know" go without equipment they should have.  Some people feel too proud or whatever to ask for charity or feel deeply uncomfortable about it...plus there's the whole thing about charity funding.  Well known ones get loads of publicity and donations, less well known ones get bugger all...so if someone's disability doesn't "fit" into one of the well known ones they are stuffed.

Just last week the blogger I was talking about earlier managed to get a scooter, only becasue someone had donated it to a charity shop and they legally can't take them.  She luckily knew someone who worked there who got it for her.  She has been turned down for funding repeatedly...despite the fact she can't walk far, can't self propel in a wheelchair so couldn't get out and about on her own. Pile of shite for a lass in her mid 30s.

The whole system is buggered and as much as Cameron wants charities to replace practically everything it's only going to get more buggered.

Ben's attitude is based on basic ignorance. And I mean ignorance not in any disparaging way but from a mindset that has never had to think about addressing such issues.

There are some amazing prosthetics out there and a mate's brother (who has severe cp) has the most amazing wheelchair but he could only afford it because he won a 2.75 million payout from the NHS  - whilst I have no doubt his loss is worth that (he has a straight A twin brother so there is a direct comparison) it begs the question how many wheelchairs the NHS could provide with £3,000,000?

If I was a BB contestant I would take a dim view of other housemates trying to emotionally persuade me to donate money to somebody else - for whatever reason.

Beacause she's overbearing and wants to bask in the reflected glory of people thinking she is performing a selfless act.

Sorry but I'm not particularly a fan of the "nice" housemate winning. Never really have been. It's a game - all credit to the best player. I don't happen to think Shabby is a great game player.
