We don't vote for a Prime Minister. We vote for our constituency Parliamentary candidate. Thereafter, it is down to the Parliamentary party who represents our vote to select or boot out who they think is, or isn't doing the job right on our behalf and select someone who they think will do the job better... on behalf of those who voted for the winning MP. The Labour Party Parliamentary members clearly thought Brown should go and indeed he will be now. It is therefore down to them who is the next party leader... irrespective of what you may or may not think about a party leader... not us.

I would also venture that a party leader who failed to achieve a majority government might be seen to having failed also, but it was down to the candidates who failed to bring home the bacon, not him.

Rant over.

You guys are absolutely right....but the leader of parties does have a particular, specific role so it does factor in to individual decisions and considerations. Eg. it signifies certain directions a party will follow, what kind of Cabinet will be formed, and a degree of clarity about how rigid policy may be. I try to look beyond how good a leader looks in a suit, and what handbag his wife is carrying...but if other people base a decision on things like that, who am I to judge?

By the way...my local MP always looks a little shabby when I see him telly, but I kinda like him more for it

My MP taught two of my daughters, he had a bad case of dandruff and he should have sucked on a mint because her had a terrible bad breathe, He comes over not very approachable and his team used to beat us every season in the pub quiz. Did I vote for him, yes! He's a bloody darn good MP

I'm totally baffled the media's hype about a non elected PM. the general public have never had a say in the election of party leaders.

Wales' First Minister, Rhodri Morgan, retired at the end of last year after a long and illustrious career in politics. He looked like an unmade bed and also had an embarrassing mother who reputedly once called Tony Blair 'Lionel'.
But he was a bloody good MP, so everyone in Wales was shocked when Blair tried to enforce his own choice of leader here, probably because Rhodri was too scruffy and independent-minded. It didn't work!
