My granda did that too Reference:

innit! He is the main reason Mr Ditty is not going to be voting Conservative for the first time ever!!! Normally I have to vote labour... cos I feel that I imported Mr Ditty to the village... I am obliged to cancel out his vote...
this year we agree on yellow!

Seriously? were you from a striking miners family? Everybody bought food for them...
My mum bought the miners chocolate digestives.... we never got the chocolate ones!
I was Ditty Dad wasn't a miner, but he worked for the Coal Board so they were all out on strike too... for about a year I think
Mam mentioned food parcels, but I never thought about where they were coming from. I'm proper touched at how kind ordinary folk were

Bugger!! Just checked and mine is for years younger than me too

I'm feckin' furious about our local campaign! Simply because there wasn't one! And after much surfing and confusion, I finally discovered on Monday night I was in a new constituency because of the boundary commission! And clearly, because no-one who was campaigning knew this also, we had no information about the candidates!
Oh! And after even more hunting the interwub, I discover I'm now in a new critical 3-way marginal!
And to add insult to injury, I discover we will also be voting for a new local Council no thanks to any campaigning from the Council candidates either!!!
How democratic has all this been for me I hear you ask?

we didn't have any direct contact with the families... I was in Leeds....
the "Support the Miners" stall thing outside Asda did used to recruit the odd kid sometimes though... to sit & look pitiful Only the kids never did look pitiful on account of the shit loads of chocolates & comics and stuff people bought them!
they were over the moon!

my local choices are abysmal too Xoch!as I said in another thread... if it wasn't such a tight run thing I would be spoiling my ballot with "No suitable candidate"... but as it's not a foregone conclusion I will vote.

I was discussing this elsewhere.. I am and always have lived 'in the south'. Clearly where you lived casts a differing shadow over how the 80's and 90's affected you.
Frankly, how the traditional heavy industries of mining, steel, shipbuilding etc faired under a Conservative government it is hardly surprising at the degree of enmity held, and understandably so. The fact that, by now, all these industries would have slowly bled to China and India due to cheaper labour costs does not relieve long held feelings of resentment.
Put simply though we cannot expect to paid a 'living' wage for just manual labour as you can buy that for bugger all elsewhere in the world. It would have always come down to this. We need to be educated, trained and skilled and that is the only thing that will stop us all going tits up as a nation
Z.

Oh, I don't even KNOW if they're abysmal Ditty! Makes it a bit easier in that respect. I can vote with my heart rather than my head now rather than stumble into oblivion with some foreseen knowledge about the candidates!Reference:

I might write that on my whiteboard tomorrow when I have to convince thirty 16 year olds that there is a point to algebra!

If that Daily Mail headline doesn't out Daily Mail any headline recently then I dunno what does. All that's missing is "Voting Labour causes Cancer"
Oh and the Sun! Spectacular. Hahahahahahaha! It's sooooo naff.

Yep! Same here Z... and I've found it quite significant how much all the leaders have been concentrating their efforts in the north of England in that respect.Reference:
vote with my heart rather than my head
I am having to do that... with the aid of a blindfold so I don't have to actually look at the wimp I am voting for.
Oh that's brilliant Leccy! "Or the forces of Hell shall be unleashed upon Ye!"
Z.... I hear what you are saying... but I think the lack of compassion... the feeling that the north was "on its own" during that time will never go away.
However hard I try to look at it objectively... deep down I always feel there is a lack of love in Tory politics!
There you go.... girly politics!

No one knows what they stand for Xochi cos they won't tell us!! They're tooooo busy saying how scary it'd be if you vote for the other lot!!
My biggest issue with the whole thing Z, was that it wasn't replaced with anything.
Right we've shut everything down...kthxbye. There was no thought put into how to help the communities adjust and as bonkers as it must seem to people from down South, we still haven't adjusted, even after all this time.
Something should have been done at the time to retrain and reorganise...some kind of action plan.

Leccy, very many of us down south were fully aware of how the north were sold down the river, don't worry. It is still at the root of our lack of manufacturing and production industries to this day.Kind of reminds you of the planning for an exit strategy for Iraq though, doesn't it?
