Just read she won't face the Death penalty because the countrys law bans executing pregnant prisoners. It's good news for her child, but she has got to have some punishment for what she did luckily it isn't her baby having to suffer for what her mom did.

That's good news! Though, I do agree she should pay for her crime...stupid girl smuggling drugs...
did she get pregnant in prision? i've not followed the story apart from hearing a snippet on the news saying she'd been in there since August last year which would make her about 10months pregnant???
I heard that they may delay the trial, until she has the baby, and then she could still get the death sentence.

Nope from what I read she will escape it totally.
From what i read and correct me if im wrong but hasn't she had enough punishment? didn't she get pregnant in prison? i very much doubt she consented to that.
Hmmmmmm.... im locked up far far away from home, no friend no family. God i fancy a shag!

Please say she didn't deliberately get pregnant to escape punishment.
Oh! thank goodness!!! that poor woman!! Hope they don't wait for her to have the baby and then do it...quote:Originally posted by darloboy07:

Don't think so. I think she is safe from death.quote:Originally posted by sciencewasrobbed:

Glad she won't get the death penalty but don't know any other facts so can't comment

If she is guilty of smuggling heroin then I don't care what happens to her
That stuff could have ended up inside one of your children or your brother of sister
as for being pregnant well lets hope she hasn't picked anything up with the encounter which may be passed to the child

Well hopefully the baby will end up with decent parents after fostering etc etc and away from this drug mule

The Times has a bit on the case:
"Ms Algar said she understood that the Lao minister will discuss a prison transfer scheme when he comes to London on Thursday, something which Reprieve would âwholeheartedly supportâ."

No details of the circumstance surrounding her pregnancy yet and she claimed her innocence at the time, it says.

Just said on the news that her death sentence could be put back until she gives birth.

For the sake of argument, and I know this is a horrible subject, what's the objection to carrying out the death penalty on her if it happened next week?
I have a visceral disgust at capital punishment myself anyway but it's the pregnancy aspect that's significant. It feels very, very wrong to carry out the punishment on a pregnant woman, I mean more wrong that capital punishment itself. But why?
If she's 5 months pregnant then that's about the maximum time doctors in the UK are willing to carry out an abortion. In what way is this actually morally different with respect to the child?
