It's a great song cologne. I don't know if they wrote it or they just revived an old Irish track but it's really good all the same. I'm not entirely sure if Shane has done anything original in his whole life but he seems to have got involved with a lot of good stuff  Fairytale of New York, duets with Nick Cave... there must be something about the lad 

Prom, it's probably a fair point, but he's in a league of his own when it comes to musicality, boozing, smoking and just living. I'm hugely surprised that he's still around.

It was written by Ewan MacColl (Kirsty's Dad), and is about Salford!

Having said that, most of Shane MacGowan's stuff was original - not just "Fairytale..." Funnily enough, I've always considered his London-influenced work to be amongst his best: e.g. "Rainy Night in Soho" and "London Girl".

Now if that was two unknowns on X-Factor.......

Eugene, I've just been having a look and you are right, he does write his own material. You have dissillusioned me about Dublin, I've always had this romantic thing about the city and the song, I'm sure there are quite a few Dubliners who would feel the same.

German, but I've been over to Ireland countless times and love it. In fact, when I first came over from Germany, I was pregnant with my son and had food poisoning. I stayed in hospital for a week and had to go back about 2 weeks later for his birth. Some of the women on the ward had been there when I was in first time round and they all thought I was Irish, which was much nicer than thinking I was German because I really dislike the accent.

If it's any consolation, a lot of Irish folk think it's about Dublin, probably because it was so closely associated with The Dubliners.

The Pogues/Kirsty MacColl connection is a curious one. "Fairytale of New York" will be forever associated with Kirsty, but MacGowan spent a long time developing the song, and originally planned to sing it with Cait O'Riordan  - who you can see in your video playing along to Kirsty's Dad's song!

Right, couldn't sleep, so I'm sticking this one in, local band who will play for anone who pays them. You have to be prepared for them to be hours late and plastered, but they are worth it.

Ialways thought Dirty Old town, was an Irish song because the only versions I've ever heard were of Luke Kelly/The Dubliners.  But just you tubed it and sure enough Eugene, you're right (as always )
