JONATHAN Ross, one of the BBC's highest paid stars, announced on Thursday that he is to leave the broadcaster.

Ross, whose salary was around 6 million pounds (S$13 million) a year according to media reports, said he had decided not to renegotiate his contract which is due to end in July. It comes just over a year after he was suspended by BBC bosses for 'grossly offensive' prank calls he made with comedian Russell Brand to 'Fawlty Towers' actor Andrew Sachs.

'Although I have had a wonderful time working for the BBC, and am very proud of the shows I have made while there, over the last two weeks I have decided not to re-negotiate when my current contract comes to an end,' he said in a statement reported by media. 'I would like to make it perfectly clear that no negotiations ever took place and that my decision is not financially motivated.'

Ross currently hosts a Friday night show on BBC1, a film review programme, and also presents a radio show on Saturday mornings. He said he would continue working on these projects until his contract ended in the summer, and would also continue to host the Bafta Film Awards, Comic Relief and other BBC specials.

I like Friday night with JR too, but Graham Norton show is potentially better if it got the guests that Jonathan Ross got. I like the idea of Graham Norton 5 nights a week as well. Thought V Graham Norton on C4 was fantastic when it was on 5 nights a week
Please no! These so-called chat shows are dated and exist merely to showcase some boring zedleb's latest product..

In the entertainment world 6 million isn't a great deal of money. Emile Heskey isn't far off that much and a lot of footballers receive even more from their heavily in debt employers.
It's just that Ross isn't very good and not funny.
As long as this cash goes on more episodes of Spooks and not some other crap presenter we should be OK.

Six million alot for the uk. It's not the united states. I don't want my tv licence money going to talentless presenters.

As someone whose OH is at the Beeb, I can tell you he and plenty of other ordinary staff there were pretty pissed off with Ross. Not only did he get away with antics any of them would have been sacked on the spot for (making abusive phone calls) but he had the cheek to brag at some awards shindig that he was "worth a thousand BBC journalists" - which was what his pay equated to.

Well I don't want my licence fee going towards animal abuse like horse racing and programmes/presenters that kill and maim animals in the name of entertainment.

The problem with the licence fee is that once it's paid it's very difficult to make your feeling felt in the way that you can with a programme on a channel that relies on adverts.

I'm not a great fan of the Wossy btw, I find a lot of what he does cringe worthy and smug and he's not worth 6 mill a year but I'd rather the Beeb spent the money on him than horse racing *shrugs*

I agree there Veggie, but the BBC make some good programmes such as Spooks, Waterloo Road, Holby City etc...and stuff like Planet Earth, Life & Coast .maybe it's time the BBC asked US, the Licence payers what we would like to see more of instead of paying for s**t presenters like Wossy......

...I'm glad he's gone, everytime he interviewed someone he tried to make it about HIM and not them, he is about as amusing as a boil on the bum

I never watch horse racing as I don't believe in it. Won't watch the grand national as it\s cruel. So I agree with you.
Oddly enough Channel 4 spend more money on Horse-Racing.

ION news the equally talentless Ant and Dec signed a two year deal for 20million of your cash. It isn't confined to the BBC. Don't forget when you pay your license fee it goes  towards financing the BBC. When you buy your new credit free, four years to pay, three piece suite, part of the money goes to Ant and Dec
