Like you I feel that Amy Winehouse, or a Nolan, would have been more appropriate, but I understand That Ms Lumley is related in some way.

I think you are really misunderstanding the situation Lil.....The gurkhas didn't want her for her Ab Fab credentials...they wanted her to be their Purdy and be an Avenger of their wrongs with a few well aimed ballet kicks....they'd have gone for Gareth Hunt if he hadn't carked it Frowner

so why just ask this question in relation to Lumley ConfusedHer Father was a Ghurka, she has probably grown up listening to stories regarding their bravery, so naturally admires them, and obviously felt they were not being dealt a fair hand by our government, I cant see the problem, and I cant see the point of your argument really

NO - how interesting!

Do tell more!

From what I understand: It appears Nepal has hundred of small villages, many of which the Gurkha's come from and some villages are 90% inhabited by Gurkha families. Now they and their families can come to the UK the individual local industries of each village will collapse bringing down the villages with it.

This is a genuine concern there, and whilst Ms Lumley's heart is in the right place, it's a case of her and other do gooders not thinking the whole thing through properly.

Joanna's father was indeed in the Gurkha Regiment and my father served alongside the Gurkhas in WW2 and always said they were the finest soldiers in the world so I totally understand why she did what she did for them.

I've wondered if her campaign might actually hasten the end of the Gurkha Regiment. No pension money coming in from the british government means that the Nepalese government has got no reason to allow its citizens to serve in another country's army.
